I heard that Microsoft was shipping some Windows Vista technologies separately for Windows XP:

In August 2004, Microsoft announced that it would make the Avalon presentation layer, the Indigo Web services technology, and the WinFX application programming interface (API) available for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (or later). Previously, these technologies had been described as key parts of Windows Vista ("Longhorn" at the time) for developers. However, Microsoft realized that developers would be more apt to target Avalon and Indigo if they were available to a wider audience than just Windows Vista.
