» New Media Server Application - by Google
Jul 04, 2008 - 8:42 AM - by Mike
In what appears to be their first attempt to enter your living room, Google has introduced its latest Windows app: Google Media Server. This tool works alongside Google Desktop to locate media files on your computer and on the web (most notably YouTube), making them available across a standard home network to UPnP compatible devices such as the PlayStation 3.

It makes sense that Google would want people to have as many ways as possible to watch their YouTube videos (and of course ads) on their TVs. The company already streams videos via third-party devices like the Apple TV and HP's Media Smart TV, but the new tool could help them reach new crowds. Unfortunately, Google Media Server does not work with the Xbox 360 due to legal issues.

The tool is currently available as an early beta, so it’s hardly ready for prime time. If you are ... [Read More]

» TV Manager Add-in for WHS (Beta)
Jul 02, 2008 - 8:22 PM - by bodogbodog
TV Manager is a new add-in for WHS and Media Center that copies your recordings off your VMC to your WHS for storage and management. It comes in two parts. Part One, is installed on the server for management of the Recordings. Part Two, is the Media Center (Vista only) plug-in that copies new recordings over to the WHS deleting the original. It also allows you to watch the recordings like you normally would via 'recorded tv'.

The Media Center plug-in deploys using the console add-in. After clicking the deploy button, on the client install \\SERVER\Software\TVManager_MC.msi

Features:
  • Moves the recordings to your WHS for storage, management, and later viewing.
  • Allows you to watch the recordings in Media Center as if they were on that PC's library.
  • You can delete recordings via Media Center or the Console.
  • You can even watch the recordings in other media programs (that support dvr-ms) via 'C:\Users\Public\Windows Home Server\'
  • It is and always will be Freeware

Known Issues (to be fixed in beta 2):
  • Does not work with Lifextender if it is set to Automatically detect new recordin

» Windows Roadmap Updated
Jun 26, 2008 - 6:30 AM - by Mike
Bill Veghte, Senior Vice President at Microsoft, explores the plans for Windows XP, progress with Windows Vista, and the view toward Windows 7 in an open letter to Windows customers.

Security and other critical updates continue for Windows XP through 2014. Although the “end of sales” date is June 30, Veghte explains how customers can purchase Windows XP and under what circumstances. That said, there are several compelling reasons for Windows Vista, including security and compatibility.

PCs running Windows Vista were 60 percent less likely to be infected by malware than those running Windows XP Service Pack 2. Windows Vista supports about 77,000 components and devices, which is more than twice as many as we supported at launch. In addition, quality and performance improvements have been incorporated into Windows Vista with Service Pack 1.

He explains that next version, Windows 7, is built on same core architecture as Windows Vista. “Our goal is to ensure the migration process from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is straightforward,” Veghte writes. Windows 7 should launch around January 2010.

» Vista MC :: Xbox360 Patch Released
Jun 25, 2008 - 3:25 PM - by Mike
Just received a note from a Media Center enthusiast in Germany advising that the Xbox360 50mhz HD issue has now been resolved following the release of Vista update 950125.

The problems which have been addressed occurred when using an Xbox 360 console as an extender for Vista Media Center.

• This update addresses a picture quality issue that occurs when you use Media Center Extender on an Xbox 360 console that has a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connector to the TV for video and a Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format (S/PDIF) connection to the audio device for audio.

• This update addresses an issue in which the Media Center Extender stops responding (hangs) when you play a large non-WMV video over an HTTP session.

• This update provides support for 50Hz output together with better quality for HD models. This feature applies primarily to regions that use the PAL video standard.

» Microsoft Releases Patch For "Broadcast Flag"
Jun 20, 2008 - 9:03 AM - by Mike
As recently discussed here, Vista Media Center users in the U.S. got a rude awakening a few weeks ago when they were unable to record some of the favourite programs on NBC. What really got them scratching their heads though was that unlike the normal improperly flagged content cable customers have grown all to accustomed to, this one affected over-the-air (OTA) users as well.

This was odd because the broadcast flag had been struck down by the FCC which should have been the end of it. The problem was actually a cable content protection scheme called CGMS-A, and when NBC inadvertently flagged some OTA content copy-never with it, users were left in the dark. While there's no way to tell if NBC has learned its lesson, the good news is that Microsoft has, and the Windows update KB950126 will change that behavior.

Now inadvertently flagged content coming into VMC via OTA or analog cable will be recorded regardless of how it is fl... [Read More]
