Hibernate with Remote Control

Hey Guys,

Does anybody know if it's possible to hibernate a MCE 2005 PC with the remote? I can Stand-by, Log off, Turn off, Restart and close Media Center, but not Hibernate.

Any ideas?

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

Haven't found any way to do it, there's probably a way to hack the registry to change the option from standby to hibernate but I haven't found it.

At the moment I programmed girder to do it for me. You can probably use girder in conjunction with the MCE remote and the HID plugin and just program 1 key do go to hibernate.

I think there may also be a way of programming the MCE remote, I don't have one but someone else will be able to confirm. If you can it shouldn't be too difficult to program a hibernate operation instead of a standby one.

Doesn't help much but if someone doesn't come up with an answer on programming the MCE remote you can at least try Girder.

Cheers,
Arkay.

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

I have just been playing with it... I turned S3 off and tried Hibernate. I just went into the Control Panel, selected power options, went to the hibernate tab, and enabled it. Then did apply (you must do this to see the hibernate option on the other power panel). I then told it to hibernate after 10 mins.

All done, went to the remote (MCE remote) and used the same button that I have been using for standby - top left corner - and voilla machine went into hibernate mode...

Thought too easy, now its snoring - can I wake it up... pressed the same button - voilla went thru the boot process, and then MCE appeared as I left it.

My problem was that I could not get hibernate after a preset time - it only worked via the remote... But I dont intend to continue using it - as it takes too long to boot in my opinion.

So it can be done.

Thanks. Might start sifting through the registry, else I'll give girder or uICE a go.

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

Impact,

Can you check if the stanby button in the MCE power oof menu gets it to hibernate as well with the settings like that?

My s3 doesn't work and I don't use and MCE remote as I have an Onkyo programmable that does everything. Just be nice for the Mrs if the stanby button did a hibernate for me too.

Cheers,
Arkay.

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

Yep - the button worked for hibernate... My wife would probably like it too - because the blue light does not flash all night in its sleep mode - hibernate turns everything off!!!

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

Thanks Impact, but it doesn't work for me. I have hibernate enabled and set to 5 minutes but if I choose standby (on the MCE remote or in the menu) it only goes to standby, not hibernate. Has anyone else got this to work?

Do you mean the programmable MCE remote button labelled 'PC'?

Another strange thing thats started happening with my pc is if i set my monitor to auto power off after x minutes, it only works if I lock the machine. If i am in windows, (even just a desktop with no apps open) it will not turn off unless it is locked. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

Little bump...

Has anyone else been able to hibernate their MCE machine using a button on the MCE remote, or an option in the menu?

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

You just got to love Windoze.....

Some can get hibernate to work, others cant... But the interesting thing Supastar - is you have been able to set hibernate to 5 mins...

I assume we both have the same software - OEM MCE2005 - and we both have done all the Microsoft upgrades etc...

I can get hibernate to work - but I can not set it for 5 mins !!! Smallest allowable unit for me and hibernate is 10 mins.

So we definately have some difference somewhere ?

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

Try reducing your stand-by time to less than 5 minutes (or turning it off) and this should make your hibernate able to go to a lower time.

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

To enable hibernate on the remote, I simply changed the option in Power management for "When I press the sleep button" to hibernate. It's the other option that appears with "When I press the power button"

Sorry I can't be more exact but I am at work.

The PC button on the remote is not programmable. The TV one is though.

That's exactly the advice I was looking for. Thanks!

The PC button on the MCE remote acts as a standard windows "sleep" button. It is customisable within Windows as eepunk describes. Thanks for helping me sort this out.

Re: Hibernate with Remote Control

Hi All,

I tried and failed to get standby to work on my computer [Athlon 64 3000+ Asus A8V] but now have managed to get it to go into and return from hiberate with the remote. Yes it does take a while to boot, but at least I don't have to leave it running! Thanks for a great forum full of lots of invaluable info.
Regards
Wayne
