Scratchy audio with Realtek ALC650

When I play CD, MP3 files or Internet radio from MCE2005, or even Windows Media Player 10, via S/PDIF out to my receiver, the sound is crackled and distorted. When I play a DVD or MyTV, the sound is fine.

When having the distorted sound, as soon as I go to WMP Tools/Options/DVD/Advanced, where I see the menu to set the PowerDVD audio options, the sound gets corrected. I do not change or set anything, just open the menu.

It seems like the video player (I have tried both with Intervideo and PowerDVD), which is invoked whenever I play a DVD or watch MyTV, manages to set some audio properties that need to be set to get the sound right, but that the MCE2005/WMP10 itself fails to set.

In all places where possible I specify the audio environment to be 5.1 & S/PDIF out. The volume control (wave parameter) is set to around 50%.

How to get it right from the beginning, every time?

My HTPC:
Shuttle Zen with ST62K motherboard including Realtek ALC650 sound and ATI IGP9100 graphics. 200 GB IDE HD, NEC DVD. Twinhan DVB-T Mini Ter.
MCE2005 Rollup2, latest updates for OS as well as Twinhan BDA driver, Realtek audio driver and ATI Catalyst Control Center (including driver). CyberLink PowerDVD6 with latest update.
