Buh-Bye PureVideo....

Alas PureVideo, I knew you well.....

You gave great picture and for all the time when I had 2.1 video you were all I could ask for... but now with SPDIF pass through and 5.1 audio you just aint cutting it anymore.

If you hadn't read my previous posts over the last few days, I've been trying to figure out why my 5.1 receive was only getting 2.1 sound from MCE 2005

Yesterday I discovered that while playing a DVD I could window MCE and access the PureVideo settings - change them to receiver & SPDIF passthrough and get lovely sound while windowed. The moment I maximized MCE again, it reverted to 2.1 sound. Today out of desperation I tried the 5.1 analog patch - same behavior.

Saying 'sod it' I downloaded the Microsoft decoder check utility, and changed the default decoder from PureVideo to Cyberlink PowerDVD 8

Eureka! - Instant beautiful 5.1 audio!

Can't really see much difference in the upscaling uality (to 1080i) - so as far as I am concerned - don't let the door hit you on the b*m on the way out PureVideo!

Re: Buh-Bye PureVideo....

Thanks - I do believe that you are correct

I installed the 30-day eval of PureVideo platinum, and 5.1 sound works fine. It is just odd that it worked before in windowed mode....

Now I just have to asked myself is it worth the $ to upgrade, or shall I just continue to use PDVD 8 codec....

Thanks

Re: Buh-Bye PureVideo....

I am running Pure Video (until I get around to getting Power DVD SE) too. There is a bug where playing DVD that it will drop the S/PDIF output (and pump through stereo). As well as the open the power Dvd window solution you can(while the dvd is playing):
click green button on the remote to get the media centre menu
settings
DVD
audio
(and I don't have a dvd in the drive so this bit is from memory but you will find it)
Advanced audio settings
surround sound mode
select s/pdif
save and click back on the picture to full screen the dvd.

If you pause the dvd you will have to do it again, so don't get pure video. But if you have, and you watch DVDs as rarely as I do, it will be a work-around while you keep forgetting to get a better codec.

Cheers
Ian

Re: Buh-Bye PureVideo....

I think I had to rerun MCE's audio set up to stop the problem of 5.1 dropping out when going from purevideo settings back into MCE.

Re: Buh-Bye PureVideo....

Folks,
i installed Power DVD 8 trail and inabled CyberLink decoderd (v 8 standard ans well) my playback of all recordings was with audio out of Sync. i tried v8 HD decoder -- same results. so went back to Cyberlink decoder v6 (i had with Power DVD v5) -- works fine. Is this something wrong with my PC (P4, 2.8GHz with HT) or it's a software thing? i want to be able to send sound to my 5.1 receiver via MOBO built-in optical output

thanks a lot
