Hi folks.
i have xp MCE 2004. no clean installation possible as no original disc, but i do have a working drive image copy and restoring my PC from it time to time. from MCE i need just basic functions -- recording and watching -- so even simple setup is working for me
my PC never wakes for recording, so i keep it running 20 hrs / day (with software timer to turn off and BIOS timer to wake up).
My problem is the famous black screen. to gain a video on TV i need to shut down PC using power button and restart when TV is on. No big deal, but sometimes there is a recording in process and i'm killing it by forcing PC to turn off. MCE StandBy Tools did not work for me, Microsoft patches and power toys are not installing as they are for MCE 2005 and not 2004. I guess i can try a registry tweak to force TV output to be on all the time, even when my TV is off and not detected by PC.... but i'm not really sure what tweak to use? can anybody point me out to direct link? i did some small registry tweaks on past so i feel like i'm up to the challenge.
my PC setup: P4 2.8GHz with HT, 1GB DDR-400, 500GB SATA-1, GeForce 6200, MCE 2004
I assume you are running a flat screen TV using DVI or HDMI to connect? If so there is no hack available, you are being hit by EDID. See this post for an explaination.

Glen, thanks. I have an older CRT TV but with DVI input.
my geforce 6200 has S-video out as well. Can i use that somehow just to pick if MCE does recording, so i wait with rebooting the PC. Or i read once some people making (DIY) LED indicators for recording is that a possible solution in MCE2004?
I also had a similar problem with my Plasma and MCE with EDID. All i did was purchase DVI Detective from Gefen. this little gadget reads the EDID when you have the system running properly and stores it. Then whenever you like you can turn you TV on or off and simialrly the HTPC totally independantly as DVI detective stores the EDID and tricks MCE in thinking it still has a display feeding this back to it...
I've seen these on teh web. Looked interesting but a bit pricey. I found it cheaper just to leave the media centre on - it seems to record often enough with SWMBO's stuff.
yeah agree with that GlenR, but i also like to make sure my machine does a routine reboot etc to keep it in good health and the last thing i want is to have to do the reboot either when i actually want to watch telli...
these days with the exchange rate as good as it is, $195AUD straight from Gefen USA delivery in 4 days is not really that much to pay for something that will ensure my machine boots properly and won't cause any in-stability issues. Face it, we all spend a truck load more on the other bits... I think it is a good investment... Each to their own though
I could never find a window to do a regular, scheduled boot. No matter what time I picked, it always seemed that at some time during the week or month, we were watching or recording. Between SWMBO recording daytime tripe, and the F1 running at wierd morning hours, I just resorted to the occssional manual reboot at times I knew I could fit it in.

Thanks, guys. Andczo, I found original DVI Detector (discontinued version, not current Plus version) for around $50 USD on e-bay. is this will be enough?

Well done... that should do it! The only difference between the detective and the detector is the detective can be pre set rather than the detector that picks up the teli's EDID. Let me know how you go once you have it all setup.
