2 MCE s booting

I'm getting 2 copies of MCE starting up. One is corrupt resulting in a black screen, the other is perfect and boots normally. Problem is the corrupt version is the one that is now booting and I can't use the system.

There's been a fair bit of tweaking happening while trying to get the appropriate codecs & drivers working but I have no idea how or why 2 MCE s start. They are both visible on the task bar.

Is there a way to remove the corrupt version?

Can I unistall MCE and leave XP the reinstall MCE?

Any ideas?
