This is strange. A few days ago - seems like maybe it came around the time of this week's EPG data (FreeEPG) - I started getting a repeatable error whenever I use the guide to search. Or to be more precise, searches work OK, but as soon as I start to scroll through the results of the search, I get a Media Center Crash. I can't do anything to get around it.
have you checked event viewer to see exactly what the error is that is occuring with the guide?
Event Viewer? Thats a new one on me - had never had any need or knowledge of it before.
OK, I found it ran it, and couldnt see much that seemed related. So I generated the error again, and nothing comes up new in the Media Center section, but in the application section I get an entry:
Quote:
Application popup: ehshell.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services : Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0x11f8 (4600), Thread id=0x650 (1616).
Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.
I dont know diddly about MCE 2005, but try looking in %windir%\ehome (e.g. C:\Windows\ehome) for a ehshell.crash file.
If present can you reply with the contents please?
Cheers
Mike

This sounds hopeful I had noticed it says "generating a crash file" but no idea where to find it. Found it where you said to look. Here's the contents (I'm sure they will mean more to you than me by far):

Well - not much of a clue really. The TuneRequest is the object that holds the information that's sent to the tuner. It looks like the UI is trying to determine whether the search result to display is HD or not.
I would have assumed that if its failing on obtaining the tune request, then it would crash when you tune to corresponding channel in the guide. Do you have some channels blocked? If so, I'd try unblocking them and tuning to them and seeing if you can reproduce the crash.
You might want to try scanning for services again. Another thought is go through TV signal setup again, or dear I say it, reimage.
Cheers
Mike

I took your suggestion and re-setup the TV options including rescanning for channels etc - though with some trepidation. As it turned out, justifiably so. I lost all services, couldn't find anythign for a while, including the network and thereby the Internet. Ended up having to do 2 system restores and completely power off everything, then finally my machine found the world again. Now I have all my services back (the most painful part is perhaps remembering what I had set up as series records, each manually over-ridden for extra shut off time, etc. The upside is it did solve the original issue in the process. I think I am almost back now - just have to deactivate numerous extra non-existent channels when I get around to it I think.
