NVIDIA PureVideo

Today, consumers are demanding smooth, high-quality DVD playback and stutter-free, high-definition (HD) viewing for a home theater experience driven by their PC. And the only way to achieve this is with NVIDIA® PureVideo™ technology.

Watch videos on your desktop PC, notebook PC, or HDTV without the annoying artifacts and imperfections of traditional PC-based video solutions. NVIDIA PureVideo technology delivers smooth HD video in all formats and with superb picture clarity. And the high-precision subpixel processing enables videos to be scaled to any size so that even small videos look like high-resolution videos.

PureVideo delivers:
  • High-Definition Video: NVIDIA PureVideo technology finally allows you to experience lifelike HD-DVD playback on your PC, notebook, or HDTV without the expense of additional home-theater devices. With dedicated hardware to accelerate MPEG-2/DVD as well as the new Microsoft® Windows Media® HD Video (WMV HD) standard, your DVDs come to life in detail never before possible on a PC. Using NVIDIA PureVideo technology, the GPU offloads video decoding from the CPU, resulting in smooth, stutter-free, high-definition video playback. And, since PureVideo supports most current and future HD formats, you can rest assured that a PC powered by PureVideo will keep up with the pace of tomorrow’s video technologies, and continue to deliver HD content well into the future.

  • Superb Picture Clarity: Using revolutionary techniques, NVIDIA’s PureVideo technology addresses typical video playback image problems, and delivers superb picture clarity free of imperfections. PureVideo uses the most advanced de-interlacing to deliver a crisp image without the double images typical of simpler, traditional de-interlacing techniques. And enhanced 3:2 and 2:2 pulldown eliminates the blurring and ghosting commonly associated with other video processing solutions.

The image on the left shows the blurring and ghosting commonly associated with traditional video processing solutions. The image on the right illustrates how PureVideo delivers superb picture clarity free of imperfections.

See this feature in action in this video
  • Scale Videos to Any Size with Full-Resolution Video Enhancement: PCs get video from many sources—webcams, camcorders, Web files, etc.—which are very rarely the size of a high-resolution display. With the accurate scaling and subpixel calculations of PureVideo, videos can be enlarged to fill the whole screen without looking blocky or blurred. In addition, when video is scaled down to fit on a small area of a PC display, typical bilinear scaling techniques loose image detail and result in flickering. PureVideo provides high-quality scaling to maintain image detail without the annoying flicker.

A combination of a hardware video processor and video decode software, NVIDIA PureVideo technology delivers stunning video to any display. Part of the GeForce 6 and GeForce 7 Series of GPUs and NVIDIA Quadro workstation graphics cards, NVIDIA PureVideo supercharges your PC video viewing with high-definition video in most formats, superb picture clarity, and the ability to enhance all videos to full resolution without video noise or artifact.

NVIDIA PureVideo technology is available in the following NVIDIA graphics solutions:
View a list of NVIDIA GPUs and supported PureVideo features

To fully experience NVIDIA PureVideo technology in GeForce 6 Series GPUs, the following software support is required:
  • 3:2 and 2:2 pull down, MPEG-2 acceleration, and advanced de-interlacing require the NVIDIA DVD Decoder with Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center Edition
  • VMR Scaling requires VMR9 support found in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Additional information about the NVIDIA DVD Decoder is available online at www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html

Re: NVIDIA PureVideo

Yes, the link is for the trial version which lasts 30 days....

You can not buy it at present as the shop is offline... I notice that this link mentions that the shop will be back online on July 8, 2005.

Gee - I am reluctant to start using trial software with a 30 day expiry, given the shop has been going to be re-opened in one months time for what seems like over the last 3+ months!!!

Also a bit disapointed with this, as I must have been one of the last ones to get thru the shop to actually purchase 1.067 and the link above says that if you are already a registered user, you must still use the trial software, and then purchase it again from the shop...

Arrgghhh!!! IF there is a lack of an upgrade policy for existing users- it will not be a friendly customer base !!!!

Re: NVIDIA PureVideo

Sorry aswigon - I had to move this thread because it was full of HTML and it messed up the site's front page.

I have to be really careful about formatting for the front page news which is why I can't allow new threads to be started there - when you asked about posting to that forum I thought you were referring to replies only, but when I allowed replies, it also allowed new threads by anyone which is what caused the problem.

Apologies - but it is necessary to have those restrictions.

Re: NVIDIA PureVideo

and what's this only tested on a 7800!! Why in gods name do you need a US$600 video card to watch tv? I didn't realise they were releasing immersive holographic HD for MCE!!

I'm getting sick of these marketing companies....

Cheers,
Arkay.

Sorry that would be my fault

Anyhow, surprising to see the doco for this new version, they are specifically listing ATI Radeon cards as fully supported

Re: NVIDIA PureVideo

Did anyone notice on the description pages for this new decoder that it says that if you already downloaded (and installed) the previous DVD decoder then this new one won't work on your system?

"If you have previously downloaded the NVIDIA DVD Decoder, this Trial will not work on your system. You must purchase product when the store is back online. Please visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder_purchase.html to be notified when the store is back online. "

What the???

Can't I just uninstall 1.00.67 and install this new PureVideo version?

Re: NVIDIA PureVideo

Anyone who has read my other posts on here would know I am a big advocate of the nvidia codecs. Here is a good third party review which confirms these offer exceptional quality and performance: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2305&p=1

NVidia PureVideo DVD Decoders + NVidia 6600 Chipset =

Now, when are nvidia going to get off their asses and reopen their online store???

Re: NVIDIA PureVideo

with all the other shiny goodness promised in this new release does anyone know if it will support decoding of the AC3 audio that AU has decided is the way to go for HD broadcasts, and MS has decided is too small a market to support at the moment ?

Re: NVIDIA PureVideo

I'm not an audiophile so I can't remember all the technical terms - but I don't believe it's a problem with MCE, I seem to remember reading it's a broadcast issue here in Oz.

Re: NVIDIA PureVideo

All versions of Nvidia's NVdvd (including this new version), the cyberlink codec, windvd etc all fully support AC3 decoding. That's why you get AC3 on DVD's.

The AC3 problem with HD in MCE had nothing to do with the codecs. It's an internal problem in the code that constucts the filter graphs for media playback. It simply isn't written to do Ac3 audio from DVB-T streams.

Microsoft are aware that the problem exists.

Cheers,
Arkay.
