Q: My MCE guide always crashes when I turn on automatic guide update. The symptom is that Guide data is corrupted. I have to turn off auto-update. Is it a known problem or specific to guide data send to my zip code?

A: Unfortunately, none of our Experts here today have seen this issue or heard of anything like that being reported. You may wish to post this question to the Media Center newsgroup. A list of all Microsoft-hosted support newsgroups is here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ps/default.asp

Re: keep losing guide and or channels

On a slightly more helpful note, Aaron has some suggested fixes:-

more generally - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...01/487997.aspx

if the problem is related to BITS - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...06/489726.aspx

Re: keep losing guide and or channels

Anyone still having this problem?

I managed to fix mine a few days ago and it's been rock solid since (finally happy again), if anyone is still having this infuriating problem and you want me to post the process I did for mine then let me know - I would post anyway but it's quite lengthy and took me about 30 mins but much better than a format and reinstall.

Exclamation Re: keep losing guide and or channels

YES daters - please give me the secret formula. I have Ice TV and reinstall my channels daily.

This issue is the thing that has me shopping for PVR's. It's too much to bear - I can't stand it anymore.

HELP ME - HELP ME...!!!!

Re: keep losing guide and or channels

I feel your pain Normy...

Okay this is exactly what I did to fix this, perhaps a few steps are not required however I wanted to be sure I fixed it once and for all so skip procedures at your own risk. I numbered all the steps if anyone wants specific clarification or if my descriptions are lacking.

Firstly, this is my software setup:

MCE 2005 with all roll ups, patches and updates.
AVG Anitvirus 7.5
Sygate Firewall pro
ICE TV + PIMP
MCE Standby Tool
2 Local accounts both admin – 1st primary admin setup for remote manual logon only and 2nd setup to login automatically primarily for viewing MCE content – all MCE related software installed to this account.
VNC installed to 2nd account to view remotely whilst MCE is in session.

1. Ensure Roll Up 2 for MCE (and all related/required updates/patches) are applied.
2. Logon as the Admin of your MCE PC
3. Open MCE, delete all existing channels and click finish to save changes.
4. Ensure no channels or guides for them are present in My TV – Live TV (should fail) and Guide (should request scan for channels) – Close MCE
5. Uninstall your EPG grabber/manager (in my case ICETV + PIMP) and delete any remaining related files and disable any MS scheduled updates for All user accounts.
6. Check ALL the applicable user accounts including %All Users% for specific occurrences of your EPG apps and and/or Recordings rename all dir’s or files relating to your EPG making note of your changes in case you want to revert later on.
7. Rename ‘%All Accounts%\Application Data\Microsoft\eHome\EPG’ dir eg: \zzEPG
8. Rename ‘%All Accounts%\Application Data\Microsoft\eHome\Recordings’ dir eg: \zzRecordings
9. Look for other EPG app occurrences (eg: ICE TV) in these locations and rename: ‘%All Accounts%\Application Data\ICE TV’ eg: \zzICE TV and ‘%All Accounts% \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\eHome’ eg: \zzeHome
10. If using PIMP or similar online EPG ‘manager’ go to the PIMP site and delete ALL scheduled recordings, all favourites, all series entries and delete the MCE device you set up in ‘options’ and save changes.
11. Log back in to PIMP page to verify no remaining recordings, favourites, series or devices remain.
12. Reboot PC - but dont open MCE yet
13. Go to DBA webpage http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp and use the Reception Locator using your exact postcode to find all available channels listings and their frequencies remembering that it is entirely possible your area may be able to pick up more than one transmission site in either UHF or VHF each transmitting the same thing but would be picked up each showing different available channels on your tuner, have this page opened for easy referral when setting up your channels to see all frequencies available in your area.
14. From the DBA channel list/s, work out which transmission site you wish to tune all your channels into based obviously on which one you primarily pointed your antenna at and/or which one gives you the best overall signal quality – You may need to test each available transmission site if you haven’t already to see which you prefer.
15. Logon to the MCE PC using the account you would normally use for viewing TV
16. Install your EPG grabber (in my case Ice TV for MCE – but NOT PIMP yet)
17. Open MCE, start setting up your Guide again - you may be asked to setup your internet connection again – do so, disable ‘Auto Updates’ also if required.
18. Once all guides and EPG data is gathered continue on to scan for channels to 100% – I get 36 in my area on 2 different transmission sites and only use 7 of them
19. Go to ‘edit channels’ within the guide menu and deselect ALL channels and save
20. Go to ‘edit channels’ again and select ONLY those channels which by description and frequency appear on the DBA list/s for your area which you want to setup – Take particular notice of the repeated channels and refer also to the descriptions you may have setup in your EPG ‘manager’ – for me on the PIMP site in ‘options’ I have also only selected the 7 channels I setup in MCE ensuring the descriptions for these match the available EPG channels in my guide eg: in my MCE guide I have ABC, ABC TV and ABC TV HOBART – they are all the same channel but according to my online PIMP setup only appear as ABC TV
21. Go to 'Add listings to channels' to assign your selected channels to the same named channels that appear in your 'options' profile setup on the PIMP site - make sure the channels you have selected to update from PIMP are identical to those you assign in the MCE guide.
22. Go to the PIMP page and setup your MCE device
23. Install PIMP on the MCE PC and update.
24. Go to the pimp page after update and ensure no favourites, recordings or series are set, if there are you still have remnants of your previous setup hanging around, don’t know if this matters or not though but if you want a clean slate, you might need to start all this again checking more closely for remaining EPG/ICE TV/PIMP/eHome directories under ALL user accounts.

Your MCE PC might run a little slow when opening related functions for the first time as it is setting up the folders and files you renamed in the background.

Once all of these procedures are completed you should have your channel/guide dropping problem fixed, been working on mine for a while now – happy again!

Now ghost it!

- Update: I have still had no further EPG/Guide/Channel problems after doing this 2 weeks ago.

Smile Re: keep losing guide and or channels

I have also been having this problem on both my XP MCE Boxes.

I Use Bladerunner 3.5 and OztivoExtreme. One moment fine then next moment I am told I have lost my Channel Information.

Dont need to reboot. If I close MCE (eshell) and restart it all is back to normal.

After reading about the issues Impact has been having with Vista.

Loosing Channels / Guide disappearing – IceTV and Vista (Possibly also MCE2005)

I thought I would try disabling MS update in MCE. Windows updates was not a problem as I have this turned off and only use manual updates so that it does not stuff the system.
I would recommend disabling this as part of the cure.

The only other thing I did was go into Settings,General,Automatic Dowload Options and set to manual download. Also disabled retrieve media for good measure.

I was loosing Guide at least once a day previously. Since doing this I have been running trouble free for 3 days on both systems.

Might be worth a try.
