RE: I can't get Media Centre to display any channels except 2 and 7 digital

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie here so please forgive me if I am asking old or dumb questions. Basically I bought a Media Centre setup from a friend, with a Fusion TV Tuner Card. I am running pretty high spec hardware and Media Centre Rollup 2 and have spent many a late night for almost a month now trying to get TV to work in Media Centre.

So in short:

Started with Fusion Light Card. TV would work in Fusion software except would crash on Channel 10 and picture wasn't great. In Media Center only channels SBS and Seven would work.

Then swapped Card for Fusion Hybrid. EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEMS except channel 10 never came up at all (Digital) - analogue would work in Fusion software. In Media Centre AGAIN only SBS and Seven would work.

Threw in an old Nebula Card - Although I never tried the Nebula TV software Media Centre again would only display SBS and Seven although just like with the other cards above it would find them all in the Channel scan, just would not display them.

I have tried playing with the drivers with all three, although given that the problem is consistent I am guessing its something other than the cards and their associated drivers.

Ran MCEReset Tool made no difference. I don't really understand this tool because a simple Channel Scan in MCE seems to update the system anyway.

So this is my question if anyone has time to help out. Why won't Media Centre display all the other (26 of them) channels it finds? When I go to the Channel in MCE it just says there is no reception but if that was true how does it find them during the scan? When running the Fusion software it finds all channels except 10 (funny that) to have a 100% signal strength.

What do I need to do to watch all Channels in Media Centre?

In my limited knowledge I keep reading about decoders? Not really sure whether Media Centre comes with one and that is my problem, but am I on the right track. Do I need to install NVIDIA Pureview or WinDVD 7? Is this my problem or am I going down the wrong track?

Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Maybe you are not getting good reception?

Strongly suggest checking using ScanChannelsBDA (from here).

When running (it's a command-line application), choose option 5 (Scan All Australian Frequencies) when prompted.
Take note of the signal strength / signal quality values for the channels it finds.

Re: I can't get Media Centre to display any channels except 2 and 7 digital

Hi

Thank you very much for your reply much appreciated, however I am confused. If it was signal strength then why does the Fusion Channel Scan pickup 100% signal strength for all channels except 10 (which is about 75%).

Surely it can't be signal strength?

Any ideas???

ScanCHannelsBDA gets the signal strength as reported from the card's "BDA" driver, which is what MCE uses. The manufacturers signal strength may be somewhat biased and certainly from all reports, MCE is much more intolerant of a slightly below-par signal strength. I usually suggest using a 3rd party signal strength meter first, to rule out signal strength categorically.

Re: I can't get Media Centre to display any channels except 2 and 7 digital

Hi

Again thanks heaps for the reply, really appreciate it... Maybe soon I might get some sleep at night. Not a good combo with 12 hour days at work AND the Soccer...

Will do and keep you posted. Just for interests sake if it is not signal strength, what else could it be. I have read so many Posts with people having similar problems and after probably 15-20 hours of reading cannot find a single solution that makes sense.

Any other idea would be appreciated that I can add to my file here???

Thanks again mate.

OK, I read your post again (more carefully this time!).

With the Fusion software they supply an MPEG decoder, which is what MCE should be using to playback Digital TV (provided you still have the fusion software installed). But there are varying reports from users with the Fusion codec.

Can you play a DVD in MCE? If so, then you have a decoder installed. If you don't know which one is being used, you can download MS DECCHECK utility to see which decoder is marked as "preferred".

If you cannot play a DVD, then yes, you are missing a decoder. Plenty to choose from with personal opinion just as varied! FOrtunately, most come in trial versions so you can compare for yourself which one is best. However, be careful of loading too many decoders onto your system. Best to uninstall each one completely bvefore trying another.
PureVideo, WinDVD and PowerDVD are the contenders.

Re: I can't get Media Centre to display any channels except 2 and 7 digital

Thank you again for your reply, do appreciate it.

So I have two things to try now although my gut tells me its still something quirky that I am missing.

1) Signal strength test
2) Decoder Check - install Pureview (seems to get the best wraps)

I can play a DVD but not sure which decoder I have (still at work)...

Any other idea's would be greatly appreciated. I am still baffled about how many people seem to have the same problem no matter what the card, and even more baffled that I can't read that anyone has actually found a solution.

Appreciate your help.

Re: I can't get Media Centre to display any channels except 2 and 7 digital

When you test again and re-post, be sure to include the exact message MCE is giving you on the dodgy channels (and also whether it is the SD or HD channels - for example, after scanning for services, do you edit the channels to remove all the superfluous ones such as Guide channels, or do you just leave the channel listing alone)

I currently cannot get Channel 9 (in either ScanChannelsBDA or MCE), which happened only yesterday right after all the TV cabling was replaced with better quality cable! However, channel 9 wont even scan, whereas you are saying the channels scan but do not display when watching Live TV...

The more time you spend in these forums the more you realise nothing should have you baffled...

Hi Again,

Don't mean to sound like a broken record but thanks heaps for the replies, if I ever become useful I hope to repay the favour to dummies like me.

In terms of your above message, I do scan them all fine in MCE (Cant test ChannelScan till later when I am home). Its just that when I go to watch them it gives me a Video Error or No Signal Received message in MCE (thats the jist of the message anyway.

After the Channel Scan in MCE I get 29 Channels. I don't remove any of them (for testing purposes) but only SBS HD and Seven (Analogue and HD work).

Thanks again,
Luke

Re: I can't get Media Centre to display any channels except 2 and 7 digital

media centre does tend to be less forgiving of poor signals than some other third party apps, also just because you can scan channels in doesn't mean you have enough strength to be able to successfully watch them.

ScanChannelsBDA will answer that question for you anyhow, you really need strengths up around 90+ to get good stutter free viewing in general.

Video Error message is usually because of your decoder, google for deccheck it's a MS util to tell you which decoder you're using.

No signal message usually is because of poor signal
