Might be nice to squeeze down the sound for late night viewing.

SOLUTION:
There is some kind of an integrated very basic audio compressor in the Sound properties of Realtek audio. Granted, it is just an ON-OFF option (no compressor settings, such as ratio, knee, dB, gain, and all those good things), but it is designed to do just what you asked, reduce the dynamic range of your output sound, so that the loud don't come too loud (and also so that you can hear the lows in louder environments, without having to crank it all up...).
1 - go to your Vista
Sound properties (from the Control Pannel, or Start menu then type sound)
2- once the sound properties are open, make sure you select the
Playback tab
3- select the adequate item:
Speakers if you go straight to your speakers (regular audio, headphones), or 'Realtek digital output' if you use a digital out. Then click
Properties.
4- once your output properties are open, select the
Enhancements tab.
5- then scroll down to the bottom of the list of check box options, locate the
Loudness Equalization item. Check the box. Then hit
Apply to activate the changes.
Trail:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...&enterthread=y locate the
Loudness Equalization keywords, and you should have more details about what this function does to the sound. Although it leaves me with more questions...
