Well looks like I may be the first user here to experience a dead 360. WAF dropped big time this morning when it wouldn't power up. The red flashing lights on the Ring of Light is not a good sign.
Did all the things like look at knowledgebase articles and then called the 360 support line. Got advised to return it to place of purchase but guess what.... there are none to replace it with. This caused me to get a little irate and achieved a store transfer and kabammm replacement 360 sameday.
All is now good and only 12 hours of no (se)xbox 360.
Hope it doesnt happen to anyone else.

And I lost all my save games... They wouldn't let me keep the old HDD instead of a new one. Going to try and get them to copy the stuff off it tomorrow on to a memory card or maybe let me borrow it for an hour to do it myself.

My X Box 360 died just after 36hours Error 79 bsod and red light flashing madly , MS support advised me it's 'Dead' and gave me a number to get a new one off the retailer , Luckly their was still a Dick Smith store with one and I got a new one straight away .. I hope the new one does not die too !, I think Xbox 360 runs very hot and I set the new Xbox360 horizontal as I think it is running cooler as the bottom vents don't seem to get much flow when it's set up verticle.
If this one Dies I going to ask for a refund

Did anyone give any indication what it was or how it happened so that the rest of us might be able to avert the same fate? I have noticed that when mine is running in my cupboard the vent out the back may as well be a heater! Also last night went to a mates place and it heated the room that he was playing in (I would have been too but i cant miss NCIS now can I?) and it wasnt warm out side let me assure you...

Don't you have an MCE box? Why would you miss NCIS if you do have one? Isn't that the whole point???

lads it is definetly a heating issue., DO not put these in a cabinet. A number of modders in the states have allready watercooled their 360's to get rid of heat. 3 cored 3.2 ghz IBM cpu aint going to run cool, especially as the xbox 360 was originally planned to be water cooled.
Check out the pic below, this company have released a slap on cooler already.
Also make sure the power supply is its full cord extension away from the console, mine is velcro strapped to the backside of the cabinet. Any power supply that has multiple fans of its own needs to have its own home

I do ahve one but im "just playing" with it so that when it comes time to build the proper one it will be correct... its my office pc as well so that sorta rules the roost as far as what its use is.

I can imagine MS Marketing..........
It's a gaming platform, a media player , a media Extender and a room heater all rolled up in *one Attractivly designed unit (*+ bulky power supply)

not so much, we all want a more powerful system and therefore we need a powerful power supply and science would dictate that as a result of power creation the energy is released in the form of heat.
The thing is more powerful thatn most computers and has a Graphics card that isn't even currently avaialbe for Pc's (may be now but wasn't the case 3-6 months ago)
Mine suddenly started artifacting last night whilst playing PGR3, but it has only happened once.
My girlfriend got me mine from EB for my birthday and, as I've read of many issues with them in the US, I gladdly took out EB's $80 2 year warranty. With that if it stops working you can bring it into any store with your receipt and they will replace it right there on the spot for a brand new one. No having to send it off to Microsoft for them to have a look and work out if it is really screwed.
