I tried to setup my xbox extender to connect to a Vista machine, setup completes, i browse to recorded TV and it freezes. I check the Vista machine and it too is locked up solid, I hard reset the Vista machine and try again with the same effect. Sometimes i can browse through the menus and even watch live or recorded but eventually Vista freezes and needs a restart. Anyone know if there is a solution for this problem?
Update:
On further investigation I've found that running MediaCenter on the PC will stop Vista from freezing when the extender is connected. Closing MediaCenter on the PC will cause the whole lot to freeze pretty quickly.
That is ironic. I just experienced the same exact issue on my computer running Vista. I have been searching for a solution since. I think it is something to do with a NIC setting but i could be wrong.
Try disconnectiing from the Xbox360, i.e. go to a different blade. Then reconnect to the media centre interface.
Both my xbox360 and linksys dma2100 have this same problem. It never use to happen, but now it happens every time.
I just did a complete reinstall and reconfigeration of my entire setup yesterday, and now find that if I have more than one extender powered on I get the freeze. I know for sure that this happened if MC wasn't running on the PC, but don't know if it happens if it is running - I will try that later after my WHS completes its first backup (was about 3 hours into the first one yesterday when the first freeze happened and lost it. Doh!

I tried having MC running on the PC, but it still freezes if more than 1 extender running ????? I didn't have this problem before doing the reinstall. Back then I didn't do the updates from MS, so I can only assume that an update is the problem???
If anyone has any more information or suggestions to try, I am willing.

Hi, I have also had this problem ever since rebuilding my VMC several months ago. It happens whether Media Centeris running on the PC or not. My reading suggests NIC and / or Tuner card driver issues, but I have been unable to find a newer driver to correct.
My NIC is the built in one on the ASUS mother board and the tuner is a Haupauge duel tuner.
Any suggestions on how to fix would be most appreciated.

I have my main rig die and am now using my kids pc as a temp.
NO crashes from the extenders.
I'm thinking it might have been a program on my main rig as the kids pc has almost no programs installed.
Because of the freezing issue, I loaded a backup (from WHS) of my old configeration. I knew it didn't have the freeze problem. It has been running well (as far as extenders are concerned), but it has a few different issues which is the reason I did a fresh install in the first place. I have most of the same software loaded on, but will continue to add some more of it over the next few days and see if things still go well. One thing that I know is different is the fact that I don't do the MS updates on the old config, but on the new install I did all the updates. I suspect that it is something from the updates that was causiung the problem??? But then again if that was the problem there would be thousands of people with the same problem - so really I have no clue at all.

I have a feeling you'll find it is simply the chipset of your onboard network (NIC) - I had the exact same problem, Vista freezing completely whenever I went to use the 360 as an extender. This started happening only when I upgraded my motherboard recently.
The onboard NIC I was using is an Atheros chipset - no matter what driver I changed it too or settings I adjust (forced 10/100 full duplex etc) it still completely locked my machine.
The simple solution - I tried a PCI Intel Pro 10/100 card that I had lying around and presto - it worked straight away and I haven't had a freeze since (been running for 2 weeks stable now).
Records fine, time shifts fine, everything works great. You don't even have to have MCE running on Vista for this to work. I'd give it a go.
The following Member(s) said "Thank You!" to Grocs for this information:
When I change back over to the fresh install I will try using a standalone card and not the onboard one.
