xbox 360 to Vista Ultimate wont connect

there both Microsoft there both on the same network and they WONT connect ...aarrrgghhhh

this has been doing my nut in for days

the specs
Vista Ultimate
Trend Micro ( switched off in the firewall dept )and exited for testing as ell
Windows firewall ..on and off with Media centre option ticked to allow pass through
4 Port hub taken out of equation and Xbox360 plugged straight into router
router Linksys Wag200G
Linksys firewall off
Upnp off in router
ports opened in router as shown on Msofts xbox360 web page
Xbox 360 set outside network with linksys DMZ set to allow only xbox through DMZ
Xbox360 live works perfect , never had any probs there

BUT IT WONT CONNECT TO MY VISTA WINDOWS MEDIA CENTRE

all goes well in the setup process and i enter the 8 digit code , it then detects and ticks the first 2 options but when it gets to configuring the media extender option , the circle spins and eventually i get

ERROR COULDNT CONNECT TO ?? whatever it says the exact words escape me now but basicaly it refuses to connect

its driving me nuts , what am i missing

i also tried letting the xbox get its own ip and sub net and it worked perfect for live but the same error occurs when setting up

i`m foxed , any you guys got any thoughts ?? apart from the hammer job i feel like giving it

Re: xbox 360 to Vista Ultimate wont connect

Try eliminating the router? I'm not sure it's a protocol that can be routed (never actually looked at packet captures though).

Re: xbox 360 to Vista Ultimate wont connect

What routers are you using?

I know the OP is using a linksys, but what about you MrCooms?

There was a long time ago with a Netcomm NB9W not connecting that was solved by using the following steps.

Quote:
Ok guys heres some more things that may get you going. I just spent the last 2 days trying and re-trying to get this stuff working and all along it was a setting in my router. I have a Netcomm NB9W but am running it through cables.

I had to change the following 2 settings, so it may be worth checking your own routers to see if they have similer settings.

1. Enable UPnP, I needed to tick this

2. Enable IGMP-SNOOPING, I had to DISABLE this.

Once those 2 settings were changed it connected first go. Now I just hope the thing stays stable. Hope it helps someone else.

Re: xbox 360 to Vista Ultimate wont connect

G'Day Gil,

I think your next step is, in part, what dgaust has quoted. Having UPnP off in the router will block all the SSDP packets, which will prevent Vista from performing all the network service discovery it wants to do. (I know UPnP has potential to be a security issue because of its lack of authentication, but you can use it to obtain all the settings that it need, and then disable it later.) The problem is for Vista is that if it can't discover enough of the network to determine that it is local, it will assume that it is public and limit the protocols and ports that it will allow.

Also, If you are trying to get the XBox to acquire settings, then you should check that the router's DCHP serves addresses to your local network range. Vista - for some reason - defaults to the 169.255.255.255/8 range. Not sure what the XBox does. A lot of DHCP servers in routers either use 10.255.255.255/8 or 192.168.255.255/16 by default. Essentally, the router serves an address that is not recognised a valid local range - unless you change either the router or the hosts.

Re: xbox 360 to Vista Ultimate wont connect

Make sure in Network and Sharing that your network is Private and not Public.

For me Vista didn't like 2 NICs and kept resetting one to a public network on reboot and i would get the same time out errors you are getting.

OK,

Hade exactly the same prob. 360 would connect to Live without probs, but VMC/360 wouldnt see each other.

Had the wired network going thru a couple of gigabit TP-Link switches, and some 10/100 switch.

bypassed the TP Link switches, was detected no probs.

Ended up changing the main 8-port gig switch for a Netgear GS608 one, left the other out, and all works OK.

It is MOST LIKELY a switch/router problem.

Re: xbox 360 to Vista Ultimate wont connect

i think the answer is the suttys reply , as yet i just havent had time to examine it more but i will

its very annoying because i use 2 screens here and i can have my network places box on 1 screen and the mce xbox setup screen on the other and when i go through the xbox setup on screen 2 in the network places box ( screen 1 ) the xbox appears listed as a media centre extender so its all almost working perfectly and as it should , when the xbox setup finaly fails ( screen 2 ) the media centre extender disapears from the network places box !!!

its like NNNuuuuuuuuuu

thanks for the replys guys , when i get time to get back into this i will post with how i got round it for others to read

until then
