Can anyone please tell me what software they use to convert xvid to wmv files for playback on a non mce pc-xbox 360 setup? Preferably free if not then which ever is best suited.
The Xbox will play Divx / Xvid streamed from a PC running any one of the these
1) WMP11 (turn on Media Sharing, under library)
2) Windows Media Connect
3) Microsoft Zune software
For what it is worth, there are other options too. I have an old P4 box running FreeNAS, and the UPNP server in FreeNAS (called uShare) also works.
The complication is that the XBox will NOT play the Divx movies in the MCE Extender interface (you have to exit MCE, go to the 'Media' blade, select 'Videos', then browse the sources available). If you want to watch divx within the MCE extender, then you DO need to convert to WMV.
A side note - you can have multiple sources in the media blade, but you can only connect to one Media Centre...
All in all, it works pretty well...although what fool decided it couldn't go in the MCE interface is beyond me (probably DRM motivated - they can't make it too easy). WAF would be enhanced
I have found that WMP11 works well, but you need to have the right codecs installed on the box serving the content (if you get a thumbnail view in the WMP11 library, you seem to be good to go).
Now if only I could make the bloody fan quieter...

Thanks for that. My old XP laptop would not recognise the XBOX all the time, actually my old XP laptop would not do much that I wanted it to do much of the time!! But just got myself a new Vista laptop and everything is honky dory, recognises and streams XVID etc through MP11. All in all very impressed with Vista, now just nuking my XP and giving it to the missus.
