XBOX 360 Network Setup - can I use switch and not router?

Can I use swtich / hub rather than router?

My situation:
- My PC is in downstair study - no telephone line there.
- My wireless router is in the upstair study.
- PC connect via wireless LAN to the wireless router.

Currently I connect using:
- Cross over cable to the downstair study PC.
- Activate internet connection sharing on PC
- Set everything "automatic" to no joy, thus I set it to manual:
a. On PC: IP: 192.168.0.3 Gateway: 192.168.0.1,
b. on xbox: IP: 192.168.0.2 Gateway: 192.168.0.3
and obviously the ICS occupies the 192.168.0.1

The setting works ok, however somehow I get a lot of "NO TV SIGNAL" issues - I think this is related to some missing data when transmitting through the network.

I then experimented with borrowing a router --> connect xbox to router and PC to router, and all is solve.

My question is:
- Will this work with a SWITCH? or a HUB? or do I have to buy a ROUTER? or will I likely to have the same problem as using the "cross over" cable?

Thanks.

My XBOX 360 works fine connecting to XBOX Live through a generic no name switch I use that connects to my comination Modem / Router (Netcomm NB6PLUS4W)

Yes I realise that if it connects through a switch --> router then it will connect evertyhing fine - as router has DHCP & will assign it to the xbox.

But my question is that somehow I have problem with using "cross over cable" only (no switch / hub) & no problem when using router.

Will I have the same problem if I get hub rather than router?

i suspect your going to have the same problems you have with the crossover cable.
the issue may be due to the fact the PC has 2 network interfaces running. you could _try_ bridging the interfaces. disable ICS then select both "network connections", hit advanced, then bridge connections. you will get rid of your double NAT and have a single network.

this may work, but i would still recommend doing a cable run to both your PC and 360 from the router, or moving the phone line to where your PC lives, or setting up a wireless bridge and swtich between the pc room and the wireless router.

Re: XBOX 360 Network Setup - can I use switch and not router?

Unfortunately I'm not able to make "Netowork Bridge" work. If anyone can help me with the undertanding it would be great.

So, the Router assign a DHCP IP address: 192.168.1.7 to my vista rig. Then Vista DHCP (is it on by default? - how to switch it on / off) will assign another DHCP address for the xbox? Is this how it suppose to work?

I assign everything to be "Automatic".

And somehow it doesn't work? I google with no joy. Thank you...
