Xbox Media Center Noob Question

well I have finally bought myself a 360, I would have to say that I am fairly impressed.
One question I wish to have answered is, Can a 360 access my files on my 2003 server. Everywhere I have read thus far tells me that they cant and I have to stream to my 360. If that is the case I am fairly disappointed. surely somewhere I can either add a username and password too my 360 OR 360's have a default username and password and I can add that too my user list on my server.

I haven't tried Server 2003 specifically but try loading WMP 11 on it and then sharing your media.

If that doesn't work Vista/WMP11 definitely works. I use TwonkyVision on Ubuntu which is not free but very cheap on Ubuntu running on an old P3 500 box I had lying around. Works great. With the new update that is just out you can even stream DIVX videos with DD 5.1 Audio!

Enjoy!

Re: Xbox Media Center Noob Question

so they were right. I can't make a Microsoft Xbox watch files from a Microsoft 2003 server. I dont wish to have 2TB of files of files sitting on my 2003 server for my VMC machines and have to house another 2TB of files on another form of storage device just for an XBOX.

POO!!!

Re: Xbox Media Center Noob Question

Can you use a junction point like in the link below. I haven't play with it yet to mount a network resource but it could possible work if all the permissions are set.

I'll give it a go over the next couple of nights (time permitting) and let you know.

Update

Doesn't seem to work for a network share.

Re: Xbox Media Center Noob Question

I haven't tried it on 2003 server but you should be able to install Windows Media Connect or Tversity onto your 2003 server, either of these then just shares your videos/music folder with the 360.

It doesn't use a traditional network share but UPNP streaming but for all intents and purposes it works exactly the same for playing back your videos through the 360 dashboard. You can browse your folder structure, click the video you want and it plays and there is no need to have multiple boxes serving the same media.
