Can someone explain why you could play all formats in the dashboard from a USB storage device, yet no be able to play all formats from a WHS share or in MCX? The USB storage scenario indicates that the playback smarts are in the X360, so why is it limited from shares & in MCX?
Justin

I think home server still runs windows media connect which for some reason cannot stream the new formats to the 360. I haven't really looked into Windows home server as I have no need but if you install WMP11 and use that to share your media to the 360 rather than media connect that comes with it then you should be able to play all formats across the network.
Lack of codec support in MCX though is a real disappointment.
Questions:
- So I will be able to use 1 computer --> through dashboard --> have 3 xboxes playing xvid natively from the computer?
- How difficult is it to switch from MCX to dashboard? How many buttons to press? Say I'm watching a "recorded tv" in xbox, how many buttons to press for me to switch to dashboard then to watch xvid ?
I'm just planning for my new house which is coming in the next few months... Thanks..
good onya for listening MS!
Thanks for stuffing it up too and not doing the obvious.
Is everyone at MS Management a Moron?
Sorry, harsh maybe.. but they just keep doing the most stupid things.
How about the obvious and doing what the owners want for once????
Isnt the huge thing about 360 & Vista, the built in Vista Media Centre and extender?
Then why are they making things so damn hard....
2 points
Native playback of multiple formats in extenders. Yes that include formats that "MS Doesnt believe will take off the ground like x264"
Hmm wasnt WMV-HD one of those formats that never made it??"
And a native bloody guide.
Its not that hard. Fork out the cash if its required. Im sure Divx will sell you whatever licenses you want and Ice will help fix the guide license issues.
Get on with it and act like a leading bloody company rather than a bunch of sissies afraid of a few court cases and 'messing up the bed'
Personally I am really hanging out for native divx/xvid support in extender on the 360. I use my 360 every day as an extender and it works great, transcode360 is a pain in the ass but it works generally for watching shows. Would be much nicer to just be able to click my videos and encoded dvd's that are sitting on my server rather than having to go and dig out the originals and re encode to wmv.
DIVX/XVID through the dash board is great and it's excellent that its there but all the formats playable through the dash really should be playable through the extender so that you can do everything through the one interface. eg if you don't use extender you can watch your media through the dash. If you DO use extender and have invested in the copy of vista/tv tuners/media centre PC/time to set it all up then you should be able to watch all the same media formats through the extender interface rather than having to drop back to the dash when you switch between live tv and video files.
I have my fingers crossed that an extender update for the 360 comes out soon, as soon as they implement the new codecs for the 360 extender I am off to buy another 360 with HDMI port to put in my bedroom as an extender. Until there is codec support though I will hold off.
regarding the what was written a couple of posts ago - the lack of a guide is not microsoft's failing, it's the fact that australia doesn't have a standardised free EPG (yet - it's coming early next year).
the lack of codec support in MCX is disappointing, but at least you can play divx/xvid through the dashboard. switching between the two isn't the biggest deal - in any case, it is far less effort than getting a MCX streaming program up and running.

And it won't be available to Microsoft. The conditions of use pretty much prohibit them accessing it.
However, don't you think MS could put pressure on the networks to provide it if they really wanted? After all they do have a partnership with the 'pre-eminent' TV network in the country (well, now that's 7 but you know what I mean).
Anyway, thanks for MCE MS, but that's the only thing of yours I'm gonna use.
