How to play all movie files sequentially in a folder?

One of those questions that must surely have been asked and answered before but is not jumping out at me when searching...

How can I get VMC to play all movies in the selected folder, back-to-back, no manual intervention required? Reason: cartoons for the kids!

Thanks in anticipation.

whilst vista picture + video library has a play all function it will cycle through all pics until it gets to videos. You're better off using a third party plugin that allows you to generate video playlists

here's one such option, though im sure there are others too (search ''video playlist'')

good luck

I found this in the sticky (tips and tweaks), I've not tried it though.

Good luck

PLAYING AVI's SEQUENTIALLY

If you have some video clips from a Formula 1 Race (or whatever) in AVI, MS-DVR. mpegs. divx and more and you want to play one after another.
you can create a file in notepad save it with a wvx extension not TXT.

<ASX version = "3.0">

My Vids

<Ref href="c:\My Documents\My Videos\FormulaOneRace1.avi"/>

<Ref href="c:\My Documents\My Videos\FormulaOneRace2.avi"/>

<Ref href="c:\My Documents\My Videos\FormulaOneRace3.avi"/>

</ASX>

Create an entry for each video you want to play, then just put the wvx file in My videos and they will automatically play one after the another.

The plug-in mentioned above (clipShow) also has the capability to create external ASX playlists like the one mentioned above. To enable it, you must go into Settings, and check the "Create external playlists from clipShow" option. Save the settings, and then follow these steps:
 1. Click "Create Playlist"
 2. Select the videos you want in the playlist (and in the order you want them to play)
 3. When you have finished adding the videos for the playlist, click "Watch Playlist"
 4. Click "Yes" to save the Playlist. Provide a name and click the Save button.
 5. The playlist will begin to play within the clipShow shell. Click on "End" to stop and exit from the plug-in.
 6. Navigate to the Video Library, and you should see a new folder with the name "clipShow playlists".
 7. Open the folder and select the playlist.

The ASX file is saved in the Public Videos folder, so any extenders should be able to view the playlist as well.

Re: How to play all movie files sequentially in a folder?

At the risk of appearing ungrateful to those who have offered suggestions, I find it pretty amazing that VMC doesn't appear to have a built-in continuous play option for video files.

Perhaps I should have used the word 'continuous' instead of 'sequential' in the original title of this thread. In other words, on one level, I don't really care what order the video files play in. All I want to achieve is to be able to select a folder in the VMC videos section, and for VMC to play all the video files in that folder continuously, one after the other, without further manual intervention.

Here's hoping! Windows 7 Media Centre perhaps??

Re: How to play all movie files sequentially in a folder?

I use the IPG Playlist Generator, which I also have setup in Task Scheduler to randomise the lists. Takes a bit to setup initially but a great util:

+1 for this 'basic' feature to be included in W7 - find it crazy that this is not there currently or for that matter in previous MC versions.
