Running Stuff at Resume - 101

I found myself wanting to run a script (reconnecting my network) when Vista resumes from Stand-by but couldn't really find anything other than Hibernator that deals with it.

Just thought I'd share this with anyone looking to do the same. This procedure will allow you to execute anything your heart desires on your system at resume. Prob handy for those wanting to update guides etc.

Vista has a vastly more powerful event log and task scheduler than XP. So we basically use this to do it.
    1. Open Computer Management
    2. Expand Event Viewer
    3. Expand Windows Logs
    4. Select System
    5. From the Actions section on the right hand side select Filter Current Log
    6. In the Filter Current Log screen use the Event Sources drop down and check Power-Troubleshooter. You should now see all resumes your system has performed.
    7. If your system has been running for long time you may have many event entries. Select one that reads The System has resumed from sleep and right click and select Attach a task to this event. <this is the cool bit!>
    8. You can now give your task a suitable name and description eg Update Guide Click Next
    9. Click Next again on next screen.
    10. On the Action screen is where you can specify what you want to do. For me this is Start a program. Select this and click Next
    11. On the next screen is where you can specify your program to run. For me this was a batch file. But it can be virtually and executable / script.
    12. That is it!
You can also choose to edit the task and really fine tune options. Note that by default this task will only run if the PC is on AC power but you can change that...

You can view / edit your newly created task under Task Scheduler and expand / select Event Viewer Tasks.

Hope this has helped someone else!

    Hi,

Now thats the hidden reasons that people upgrade to new OS'.
Sometimes you think that all the has changed it a few features and lots of graphics however the reality under the skin there is lots of smart features.

Thanks for the heads up on this one. I know it will be helpfull moving forward (and also one of those things that are difficult to track when a mate does it to have a laugh with you)

Question Re: Running Stuff at Resume - 101

Can this method be used to solve the problem of losing TV tuners when resuming from sleep?

Is there something that can be run to kickstart the tuners?

    Cheers

Greedo, use Hibernation instead of Standby. Hibernation will wake like standby but Windows will remember what it was doing prior to sleeping.

Awesome work Vfast. That's exactly what I've been looking for with my VFD problem. Using that methodology I would imagine I can reinitialise the supporting software on resume so that the VFD will resume receiving messages from MCE. What I now need to check is if I can stop the program on sleep. That might be the killer but then if not I guess I could just stop and start on resume.

Hmm should be easy - found an event called Kernal-Power and it stated the system was going into Sleep. So you can attach a task to that if you wanted, just as long as it could execute before sleeping. Otherwise your stop / start would work.

Interestingly I now have a totally different issue to tackle and that is that the IRTrans device, once enabled in the device manager is now suddenly accepting commands from the remote even without the IRTrans USB software loaded. I'm sure it never did that before. That means that it's probably going to interfere with the ehome receiver so I'm probably stumped anyway. Why is it never easy?
