I have been messing around with the storage of movies for a few weeks now and thought I might just throw out where I have been going with it all.
My orignal thoughts were to archive my DVD collection on the Hard Disk like a movie jukebox. With this in mind I bought 2 x 300GB HD's and off I went.
I have been told/read that the best compression technology would be AVI DivX and so started using Decrypt followed by 1click ripper.
With that, anything close to DVD quality or anything I could handle watching, knowing my DVD is on the shelf ... takes between 15 to 24 hours to covert and ends up being over 3GB. So I have resorted to ripping some of my favoruites only. I am not sure if I am being to fussy and guess that any compression will result in quality loss but is that what we have to accept.
As far as archiving TV and with the above file sizes in mind. I recorded a long movie from TV and edited adds using Videoredo (thanks ExtremePC). Using Videoredo you then have the option of saving it as MPG or VOB. So I saved it as a MPG (6.3GB) for HD viewing through MCE. I have also saved it as a VOB file with the intent of saving it on DVD for playback on a standard DVD player....now stumped again.... I have tried to use Intervidoe DVD copy to do this although it does recognise the single VOB file as a DVD and therefore can not create it.......
Anyway I thought I might just throw this stuff around and see if anyone has found a little groove for this stuff. I have read various posts and most people seem to be archiving using MPG or AVI. My thoughts are n the event of a HD meltdown, all will be lost and therefore have opted for DVD storage in VOB format. Playable on PC or DVD player and perminant.
Thanks all
Baxter

I went through this dilema myself a little while back and finally solved it by buying a Samsung Divx certified DVD player. What this means is that i no longer have to author DVD's. All I do is convert to Divx and do a straight filecopy burn. I managed to get the entire Season 4 of Smallville onto a dual layer DVD-R.
The player will playback Divx, Avi, Mpeg etc etc as well as normal CD's and DVD's, and the best thing is it cost $125.00.
The drawback when you author DVD's is no matter what format the original is it will either up or down convert the file based on length of play time and not file size. And as we all know playtime is playtime and theres nothing you can do to fit more "playtime" on a DVD.

Another option is DVD Decryptor in IFO mode then AUTOgk (auto gordian knot) whole process takes about 2 hrs., I set the audio track that I want and the target quality and Autogk does the rest. The filesize can be anywhere between 1.4g and 3 g depending on target percentage and accetable picture compression ratios. I usually set it to 90%.
I have my DVD library stored like this and by using ffdshow filters and playing with its settings you wouldn't know the difference.
I use eazyvcd for this purpose. It's a free pog that rips any dvd to scvd (better quality) or vcd and crunches it to a 735 mb file. I then put this file in the "My Movies" plug-in and the file plays wonderwel in MCE. You can find this free pog with the free dvd's supplied by PC user magazine. It takes about 1hr 45 min to get 1 movie done.

hm I would disagree with the statement as you really are giving it a hell of a compress . I also rip to xvid, but the file size is still st between 1.5-3GB's.
Thanks in advance...
- After reading several post here, looks like the best way to store DVD in your hard drive is to rip using DVD Decriptor into 1 file, and change the VOB file extension into mpeg? Correct?
- Sorry for asking this stupid question, but, how could you rip into 1 file? (which option in DVD decriptor)?
- In some instance i want to keep the menu? Any idea how?
- Are there anyway I can still keep my chapter info from DVD if done this way?
I use CloneDVD, it does everything you are after, however, it doesn't make Divx... It allows you to keep the DVD exactly the same as it was, or just drop all languages, but english, keep or remove menus, create vob file structure, make iso file. You can create any custom file size you like, and it tells you how much compression there will be. It's compression engine is fantastic..
Can't really fault it, been using it for years to copy my DVD's (hate using originals, and it's great if you fall asleep, no cycling menus) and have no problems with it at all. It's downloadable from the same site as AnyDVD, as they were made to work together and are now owned by the same company. http://www.slysoft.com
