xbox360(Wireless), Media Centre PC (Wired) setup not working - HELP

Hi Guys,
just need some help setting up my media centre PC.

i have an xbox36o with a Wireless Networking Adapter and Xbox 360 is connected to my Wireless Router (D-Link DI-624s). Every thing is fine uptill here, as i can goto xbox 360 market place, play online games and every thing.

My problem is Media Centre does not work work when i connect my Media Centre PC to my router using an Ethernet cable. (it works fine if both xbox 360 and media centre PC are connected wireless)

Xbox 360 (Wireless), Media Centre PC (Wireless) - it Works fine no problems
Xbox 360 (Wireless), Media Centre PC (Wired, as recemonded by Microsoft) - It DOES NOT work, i can't even ping xbox 360 from my wired Media Centre PC

i have tried turning off firewall & anti-virus software, NO LUCK
i have tried clearing all network settings from xbox 360, and add network settings again, NO LUCK
i have tried running network setup wizard on Media centre PC and setup same name for WorkGroup and SSID, NO LUCK

Also, when i run "Media Centre Extender Manager" on my PC and try to "Add a new xbox 360", it starts up the setup process and ask for a 8 digit key, but validation get failed (No Xbox 360 Found in your network)

i hope someone can help me to troubleshoot this problem.

Thanks in advane

samsar,

Have you tried having a wired connection for both?

Are you able to get the same ip / sub net range for both Xbox and MCE PC?

no i haven't tried hard wire both, as my xbox 360 is too far away from router.

yes ip's are fine, i am using DHCP and subnet mask is also same for both wireless and wired.

is this issue has anything to do with auto sensing, especially MDI/MDI-X sensing??
if both devices are wireless, media centre PC automatically detects xbox 360, but when media centre PC gets wired, no detection

Bugger.

It sounds simular to others that have a MDI/MDI-X sensing problem.

Do you have other PCs on the network? can they talk to the MCE box? or the Xbox?

Do you have a cross-over cable? you could try that (but that seems like a stab in the dark).

Or you could try your luck with D-Link support in disabling MDI/MDI-X - Assuming the 624+ supports MDI/MDI-X (is this possible?)

Other than that - as the tree said to the lumberjack - "I Stumped"

I don't think it's related to MDI/MDI-X as I use a DI-624 & have no probs (& used to use a 624+ & that was fine too). Also, as you've said, you get to the internet, so the network is working correctly.

You said you had them working with both wireless - I think you might need to kill off that connection prior to getting the new connection to work (the Xbox probably sees the wireless & wired connections of the PC as if they're 2 differnt PCs). In the 360 dashboard, go to system > computers > Windows Media Center & select it to disconnect. You'll then have to re-establish the connection (I believe the 360 should start "broadcasting" that it's looking for a MCE PC).

Justin,

I tried all that, i disconnected MCE PC from xbox 360 dashboard and also disconnected xbox 360 from Media Centre Extendet Manager, but some how the MCE PC does not detect any xbox 360 on the network.

And yes i can see/access my wireless laptop from wired MCE PC without any problem, bugger its just the 360 getting me mad.

OK.

What about trying this? Give the wireless NIC on the MCE PC a fixed IP address (presuming you're using the default range, something like 192.168.0.5, sub net mask of 255.255.255.0 & a default gateway of 192.168.0.1), & then make sure the wireless to wireless extender connection works. Then shut down the 360 & disable the wireless NIC on the MCE PC. Then give the wired NIC on the MCE PC the exact same address that the wireless NIC had & see if the 360 will automatically connect to it then.

Edit: Forgot the DNS entry - make only 1 & make it the router's address - 192.168.0.1

This is basically the process I took when I changed NICs on my MCE PC (was all wired though) & it worked fine.

no luck with a static IP (wired MCE PC) either, when i run the Media Centre Extender Manager wizard, it asks for an eight digit key, but it never gets verified and come back with a message "xbox360 cannot be connected".

i just figured out that i can't ping xbox's ip either from wireless or wired MCE PC. is there any reason why? my xbox is live and connected via the same router (DI-624s).

Man that is some freaky crap.

What happens when you go wireless on both, verify the xbox and then just connect the ethernet with wireless still active - can you still see the xbox? if you can see the xbox could you then disable the wireless?

Do you have to go through verification all over again? - but by the sound of it you have already done this and more - well except use a 10 lb sledgehammer.

(man this is worrying - I just ordered my xbox to extend).

Maybe because the original setup was done with the PC in wireless mode, the Windows firewall for the wired NIC doesn't have the right exceptions set up? Have a look at the entries in the firewal exceptions. There should be media center extender & windows media connect entries.

I know this a bit left field, but it might be a firmware issue with the router. Does it have the latest firmware on it?

I've read a few things about some routers blocking "discovery" (AKA multicast). This is the reason why they don't recommend having the 360 & MCE on different switches (I have, & it works fine for me). This isn't the exact situation you have (physically), but you are actually using 2 diferent swiches - the wireless part & the wired part. So, there might be a setting within the router that is causing discovery not to pass between the wired & wireless. Are there any UPnP (universal plug & play) options in the router's settings? These usually relate to Internet>LAN traffic, but they might have some impact between the wireless & wired sections.

Other than that, maybe you need to fiddle with the wireless mode that your router operates in (SuperG, Turbo, etc.)?

I think you guys are right, it has some to do with my DI-624s Router, because when i have both xbox and MCE PC wireless, they work fine and as soon as i wire MCE PC while wireless still running, the connection stops working between two. I have tried every possiable thing to fix this wired wireless mis-match without any luck.

i think its time to use D-Link support and let them use their brains for once.

DI-624s is one of the new routers, so there is no firm upgrade as yet. i have checked their website.

I think my router does support UPnP, so i'll have a look at that if its causing any probs... will be back with more.

Thanks guys for all your input and hopefully we can get through this soon!

Re: xbox360(Wireless), Media Centre PC (Wired) setup not working - HELP

I Spoke to D-Link this afternoon and they told me it has nothing to do with their hardware and its completely network setting prob, but then i asked for firmware upgrade for DI-624s and there was a new version available and after firmware upgrade all working fine

So as we predicted the problem was with Router but nothing else, now i can access my xbox360 from wired MCE PC without any probs. thanks guys for all your input
