WHS Restore

Just thought I'd share my experience after doing a restore using WHS.

Yesterday my X60 laptop got the continuous reboot bug whilst installing xp sp3, seems I didn't use the latest update

Anyway, great opportunity to try WHS restore. It had only just backed up so I figured it wouldn't take long. Insert the WHS restore disk into my usb DVD drive, crash on start-up screen. After much research find that there is a new dual boot disk that can handle usb devices.

Download new disk and burn. This time connects to network but crashes during restore. 4 hours in I'm loosing my sense of humour. Bit more research and find that removing laptop hard drive and connecting to desktop computer is a work around. Apparently WHS restore doesn't like some NICs, my x60 has a vanilla intel pro1000 nic.

Disconnect all HDDs from my desktop, just to be safe. Connect laptop HDD via snazzy usb to sata adapter that I thought I'd never use, boot from restore disk and 60 mins later all is well. By now its 1am.

The good thing was that because of WHS backup I new I hadn't lost any data. I have now gone back to Acronis for the laptop. Did a test restore a few minutes ago. Boot acronis from within windows, point to archive, 10 minutes later laptop is restored.

Moral, WHS restore works but still has some teething problems. Certainly not as polished as Acronis, but it is so much easier to run.

Re: WHS Restore

Interesting. I've done a few restores from WHS for various reasons, and never had an issue. No laptops though.

I fel like a bit of a dummy because there is a simple fix for sp3 issue.

As for WHS, I think the problem is with laptops
