How do i reinstall WHS ?

I have been havbing trouble wih my HS, every few hours it seems to restart (usually when i'm streaming to media centre). It began shortly after I installed Lights Out, and has been going on for a few weeks.

I'm fed up with it, and want to reinstall WHS. How do i do this so I don't have to copy all my data off the drives, then load it back on like I did on my first install? I can't just pull out the non-sys drive hard drives and put them back in, can I?

Re: How do i reinstall WHS ?

If you boot from your install disc it will present you with a drop-down selection of new install or re-install. If you pick re-install all data will be preserved when you install.

This works even if you have to physically replace the system drive.

Re: How do i reinstall WHS ?

Do a search on this forum or the WHS forum. I described a procedure for doing it.

You can either:
1. Use the WHS disk to do a re-install. It is luck of the draw whether you are presented with the re-install option. If you do this WHS will rebuild your server and you won't lose any files but you will lose backups.

Be warned, if you do not get the re-install option and proceed you will lose EVERYTHING! This is covered extensively on the whs forum

2. Use Acronis or similar to make an image - won't work for you as you want to fix issues

Re: How do i reinstall WHS ?

Thanks guys, I'll give it a go tonight.
Is there a way to copy my back up's manually? Not overly concerned about keeping them, but some would be useful.

Off topic:
Not sure why Light's Out didn't work, I never got it to hibernate/resume properly, and then it started this 'restarting' issue. The computer didn't actually restart, it just lost the connection for a few minutes then came back online. Hopefully a re-install will get it back to normal.

When I first installed it, it was version 0.7.0.67. I then upgraded to the next, and then the newest, but it still did not function properly.

I might try a fresh install of the new version once I re-install WHS.
How did you disable the SB Core? From link in the instructions for Lights Out? Maybe I stuffed something up in there (I did check, and the service was not running).

Re: How do i reinstall WHS ?

I did disable sb core. It was quite tricky and I'd didn't get it right the first time.

Check that before you rebuildh

Re: How do i reinstall WHS ?

Didn't get a chance last night to re-install, but after thinking I may have stuffed up something doing the SBCore (instructions were kinda tricky), I found an alternative, and simpler way:

From here:

After searching for a solution to this problem and stumbliung across the process you described in your post I may have found an even more simple solution to this problem:

By going to Administrative Tools then into Services you can select the process SBCore or "SBS Core Services" and view its properties, although trying to disable the process from running here produces an Access Denied Error you can however disable it for specific hardware profiles under the Log On tab. As I'm only running one hardware profile this is the current one obviously and it allowed this change to be made without an Access Denied message. After rebooting there were no signs of the sbscrexe.exe running and no annoying hourly switch offs!

I hope this works for everyone else, even though I'm sure Alans method works it may save you time and hassle of downloading Process Explorer. Still not sure why this was a problem in the first place though :-S

Re: How do i reinstall WHS ?

Well I succesfully resintalled WHS the other day - didn't lose anything. All backups and data is still there, pheww...

I might give lights out another go tonight when we get the net hooked up at home.
