WHS video playback and shut-down problems

EDIT: I realised (blonde monday for me!) that there is a WHS subforum, my apologies for not placing this in that section.

So I’m having a few problems with my WHS and was hoping you guys would be able to help given how great this site has been for information when I was building my media centre HTPC last year. I’ve searched this site and google but the key words I’m using aren’t getting me answers I need.

Firstly:
When playing video files (avi mostly, but also vob and mkv) on my HTPC which are stored on the WHS, I cannot resume videos if I press the stop button. If I press pause, it works fine. But if I press stop and then try to resume it, the screen comes up after a short wait saying video finished and I get the standard end of video options (restart, delete, done).

I’m using a gigabit network so bandwidth shouldn’t be an issue for watching the video files…

I believe it is a problem with the server and not the htpc as this problem was first noticed after I installed utorrent as a service (the server also ran noticeably slower). I’ve since uninstalled utorrent service and program and the user which the service was installed for. So now there is just the original admin user and no utorrent service. The server immediately ran faster again, however I still have the problem above with trying to resume movies once I click the stop button.

Secondly:
This problem is less troublesome, but annoying nonetheless. I don’t have a screen connected to the WHS, and I normally just press the power button and it shuts down. However recently it has “ignored” me and not shut down and I have to hold down the power button (not ideal).

Any help would be most greatly appreciated

Re: WHS video playback and shut-down problems

Point 1 does sound WHS related although I'd try uninstalling/reinstalling the codec that you use for avi files.

Point 2. I'm using lights out on WHS, which is a brilliant utility for managing the WHS. I have mine hibernating every night at 10 and coming on at 6am. I have noticed that even with lights out it sometimes takes some time to turn-off

There is a service in the WHS that turns it on every 45minutes. I can't remember the name of it but the installation of lights out includes disabling the service (SBcore or coreSB?)

Hi slayer, I've removed the blonde for you and placed the thread in the WHS section.

I'll have a look at my WHS tonight and see if I can help with the other issues.

Re: WHS video playback and shut-down problems

Video issue:
ok, so i was testing (playing and pressing stop and then trying to resume) a number of videos last night. I'm of the opinion it isnt the codec as i had no problems with vob or avi on the htpc, only those stored and accessed from the server. would my assumption be correct? stop and resume did work when i did them immediately, but if it was stopped for any length of time, it took forever to resume, if it resumed at all...

Shutting down issue:
with the shutting down thing, i pressed the power button on the case and it ignored me (it does work sometimes and used to work every time), however i logged into the client thing (you know, that green whs logo at bottom of screen) and clicked shutdown in there and the server turned off as it should and without any problems. so i'm stumped.

Re: WHS video playback and shut-down problems

Definitely sound like there is a network/WHS issue.

What addins do you have installed?

My playback improved by mapping all my WHS drives on my VMC

Re: WHS video playback and shut-down problems

only addins i had was utorrent, but i took that off about 4 weeks later as i noticed it slowing my server down as soon as i put it on. so at the moment i have nothing on there.

do i need to just bite the bullet and reinstall the operating system? i'm concerned something is left over from having utorrent on there, especially as my server was running flawlessly untill i put utorrent on it as a service.

Re: WHS video playback and shut-down problems

early on i did a rebuild for a similar reason. I figured out how to male an acronis image of the sys, which I explained in another thread. Luckily WHS is pretty easy to install provided the reinstall option shows up when you do it.

Re: WHS video playback and shut-down problems

Well everything (except for the shutdown issue) seems to be fixed!! I'm so happy.

Thanks to everyone here, and especially to my mate (also my free network helpdesk haha) for helping me fix it.

We remoted into the server and changed the Jumbo Frame size from 4 to 7 Mtu and that solved the stop/resume issue i was having.

We also fixed another problem i was having with accessing files i recently moved to the sever by going to videos/properties/ and then selecting the "inheret rights" tick box. Seems some of my videos which i thought were corrupt we actually just restricted due to some permissions doing funny things.

I'm thinking now that i didnt need to remove the utorrent service (as i blamed it for my problems), although i think i'll leave the server alone now its running smoothly again and use my old and unused laptop as a utorrent downloads computer.

So thank you guys
