WHS backup functionality elsewhere?

Hey guys.
I've set up a WHS test bed machine and trialled it all out, and really like the connector and backup system which will backup all the PCs.
However I already run a Server 2003 domain controller on my network which has all the storage, DHCP, active directory, internet sharing, print sharing etc for the network running.
I don't see much advantage in WHS's file sharing or remote access features as I can already do all that on my domain controller.
The only part I'd use is the automated backups.
Is it possible to implement a similar system on a Server 2003 domain controller machine?
I can't justify another box and another box running all the time to run WHS just for backups, but would really like to implement a similar system on my domain controller, which already runs 24/7.

Any suggestions??
Cheers.

Re: WHS backup functionality elsewhere?

I don't think Server 2003 will do your backups.

I would be considering two options:

1. Do you need Server 2003? Unless there is some specific reason / functionality for Server 2003, you could decommission that and convert to WHS.

2. There is a plugin available for WHS that lets it sleep / wake up. You could then set it to wake up, backup your clients then sleep so you don't have it running all the time.

You could try Windows Live OneCare. It allows you to manage backups of multiple machines to one central location. It also includes online backups that are limited to pictures only, and costs an additional $80 per year.

You can get it here. It even has a 90 day trial.

Rob.
