I have finally got the Windows Home Server up and running
overall i;m fairly happy with the backups etc but im still unsure
if i should put my 1.2 Tb's worth of media (tvshows/movies/music)
on the server because of the data corruption bug.
I plan to have access the movies with mymovies on the mediacentre
the tvshows through tvlibrary on the vista mediacentre
and the music on all the computers using itunes and zune software(i own a 2nd gen zune)
Is it safe to have all of the data on there because i really do not want to loose it, its a fairly large collection thats taken quite a while to setup. or should i wait till june for the data corruption fix to be released
You have to backup, if you are concerned about your data.
How about getting 1TB external HDD and use SW compression?
I am running around 2 TB of storage in HW RAID5 for the last 3 years and had to replace faulty HDD's twice. But I keep the most important data on 750GB external HDD. Just in case

As far as loading so much precious cargo is concerned, especially in an environment where there's a known bug which won't be fixed for months yet - I understand your caution - I'd be hesitant as well at this point, but given that your data is not on your WHS yet must mean that it's currently sitting on several HDDs somewhere else?
If you're thinking of adding the existing drives to WHS you'll lose everything anyway since WHS will need to format them before it can add them to the storage pool.
But assuming you plan to buy new drives to accommodate the data in WHS, then wouldn't that automatically provide you with a mirror with the same data sitting on the old and new drives?

Hey Mike is it about time I made an offsite backup of my files?

I can recommend OpenSuse 10.3 for home server use. Mine works like a bought one.
I just built a new Quadcore OSX/Suse 10.3 desktop machine so the old Suse machine is now performing as 100% server.
LVM/Raid config is easy. I also have it set up headless so X doesn't start at all. I start a vnc server in startup scripts and connect remotely to run torrent/newsbin downloads.
Server still handles all my mail as well. I just downgraded the CPU from a 3.2Ghz prescott (heater), to a 1.8Ghz Northwood. 5 volted all the fans in it so now it's cool and quiet. Hibernate is working also.
I did configure WOL and automatic sleep but found my LAN card too sensitive to network traffic so it was always waking and sleeping...
Anyhow. If you want to try Suse I can give you my startup scripts for VNC etc. SMB config files etc etc. Make life a little easier

In the server at the moment i hav a 750gb drive with about 500gb free space in which im going to copy all my movies 2 (about 500gb) then i will add the empty drive (format etc) then i will add the rest of my media and put the third drive in the server
Its a pretty long way of going about it but i think it should work and by the end i should have about 500gb free space for more stuff
+ thanks for the other answers i think im going to go ahead with it now
