Question about adding drives

Just had a quick search on Google and couldn't find an answer so i'll ask you guys.

When you add a new drive, do you need to format it? I have 3 full hard drives which i want to add to my WHS (currently building) and I dont have enough storage space to back them up to reformat them. They are all NTFS, can they just be plugged in and the data carried across?

Cheers
Andy

Re: Question about adding drives

Hey there .. i think your question is twofold

1) If you have drives already formatted with information on them - then the answer you are seeking is no ... you can just plug them in and theoretically away they should go! (less than 1% of the time there may be issues with different motherboard BIOSs but im 99.9% sure you wont have any grief).

2) if the drives are BRAND SPANKING new, its more than likely when you install the drive you will need to go into Disk Management - partition them and format them.

Hope this answers your question

Re: Question about adding drives

Yep, thanks a lot.

The drives are all formatted and contain a large quantity of video and music files, reformatting would be painful!

Re: Question about adding drives

Hi andysl,

Unfortunately when you add drives to your WHS they are formatted and you lose any data on them

To quote from the WHS documentation,

" CAUTION
Your hard drive will be formatted when it is added to your server storage. Make sure that you copy any files that you want from the hard drive before adding it to your server storage"

So you cannot just add your drives and keep the data.
Can you copy one drive to other storage, then add the drive to the server, then transfer the files and repeat the process?

Craig.

Re: Question about adding drives

No worries mate,

Looking forward to building my WHS over Christmas, just been reading a lot to get prepared. Its worth looking at the WHS site and downloading their documentation.

Craig.

Re: Question about adding drives

make sure they are not connected when u install WHS...it will AUTOMATICALLY format all other HDDs in the machine and assign them to your storage pool!!!!
