OK, I have two questions that are unrelated, but still about my WHS box:
1. For streaming your mp3s, avis, etc from WHS to your VMC, is it better to map a drive to the relevant folders on your WHS, or use UNC names? Or doesn't it matter?
2. I want to add an additional disk, but I have run out of 3.5" bays. I have a heap of 5.25" bays left, so does anyone know where I can get an adaptor to fit my 3.5" HDD into a 5.25" bay. I'm sure they are about, but do yuou think I've been able to Google them? Maybe I used the wtong term?
1. A mapped drive or UNC mapping will all lead to the same place and same result. UNC mapping is just more universal (as the name implies ) and can easily go across operating systems. UNC naming also removes the 26 letters of the alphabet problem for M$.
2. If you try your favourite hardware site and look in hard drive accessories "mount" you will probably find them, ie http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/13414/HD...ric/HDD-MT.asp. They come in all shapes and sizes, some are complete cradles, some are just side brackets. Oh yeah, and a heap of 5.25 bays with 1Tb in each - sweet
Have fun.

Regarding you quest for 5.25" to 3.5" HDD bay converters you can always go for models that turn 2 No. 5.25" bays into 3 No. 3.5" bays like those offered by Lian Li, see
Lian Li, Silverstone and coolermaster also offer similar models that turn 3 bays into 4 etc. may be a way of squeezing more bays into your existing server case.
Hi GlenR,
1. I would map a drive - sounds silly, but it seems faster. Try both and decide for yourself.
2. I am using this convertor: http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/72812/CA...STB-3T4-B1.asp
It work for any case with spare 3x5.25 bays and it has a fan.

One thing I wouldn't do, is change the location of your My Videos, My Pictures folders etc. to your network locations on WHS with Vista. If you end up changing your server name, Vista chucks a wobbly when trying to connect.
Thanks for the responses guys. I got the mounts. I had googled everything i could think of - adaptor, cradle, 3.5", 5.25" - everthing except "mount".
Christmas break project is to get WHS configured, hence the map vs UNC question. I have known some apps to perform better on drive mappings, and some not care. I wasn't intending on moving the My Videos, but was going to put a shortcut to WHS in there. To map or not tomap, that is the question.

Personally I am a fan of mapping but I set up individual sgares for each media type on my NAS device. That's because sharing a high level folder with media subfolders has all sorts of undesirable side effects like miedia showing up where it doesn't belong. Once my shares are configured I mapped V: to Videos, M: to Music, P: to Pictures etc. It is then easy to navigate in Vista as well rather than typing UNC's all the time.
It depends on how many folders u want to map...i hate having heaps of drive letters...so if you are doing 5 different folders, then i wouldn't map them personally...
I have mapped my user folder to my Z: Drive..ie \\server\users\mike
and put that on all my PCs (as i don't like the default folders WHS has)
and you know GlenR...i know its a little less elegant, but WHS does support external drives too...you could always put them on USB/Firewire/eSata...

I'd just map the folders.
one way to get around this is to make your router assign an IP address based on the MAC address of the NIC...that way even though u have DHCP, the IP address will always be the same and you can use that instead of the UNC name...i do that on all my PCs, cause i like to know what their IPs are!
