HP, Microsoft delay Media Smart Server shipments
HP and Microsoft have decided to delay shipment of the first product to use Microsoft's Windows Home Server operating system. An HP spokesperson today said that the company and its partner Microsoft had decided to rework the MSS's software to make it more "user-friendly" to general consumers.
Re: HP, Microsoft delay Media Smart Server shipments
Probably because it is just that...not good enough for dumb noob user who doesn't know what a file system is. i personally think it will take a couple of versions (2-3) before this becomes a reasonable Central Backup and control for home Pcs. Go ahead and test it but I wouldn't rely on its features.
Re: HP, Microsoft delay Media Smart Server shipments
I think they would've been better using hardware RAID. Since using my Linux box as a software RAID5, it's heaps better performance wise than what WHS was.
Re: HP, Microsoft delay Media Smart Server shipments
Why was the balancing such an issue? Mine says it's balancing a lot too but it doesn't seem to affect anything I'm doing via the WHS PC. The only issue I've had is corrupted databases which have lost the backups, a pain but fixed in final release (so I hear).

Re: HP, Microsoft delay Media Smart Server shipments
If I was copying stuff to and from it, you could just notice it was sluggish. Once you copy stuff, then it needs to re-balance again. I have a wireless connected MCE 2005 and it is just on the edge of stuttery (1 pause every now and then) when watching stuff from my current server, but with WHS, at times it was stuttery.
When I copied all my files to WHS, it took 2-3 days for 500gb. With the Linux software RAID 5, it was less than 24hrs for the same amount.
I really just had a problem with seeing that HDD light on 90% of the time.

Windows Home Server Updates.
Since the announcement of Windows Home Server RTM (Release to Manufacturing) in July, the team and our hardware partners have been aggressively gearing up for the final retail availability of solutions powered by Windows Home Server, slated for this Fall and in time for the holidays. We’ve received a substantial amount of positive feedback from the media, analysts, reviewers and our 100,000+ beta customer community who have been using the software. Also, as anticipated, the Windows Home Server system builder version is currently available through the system builder channel in many countries, and expected in U.S. in early September.
We’ve identified a number of ways to make the product even better since the initial release, As with most Microsoft products, updates to Windows Home Server will be automatically available throughout the lifecycle of the product and the WHS team is working on an update that will be available in September. These updates will enhance the usability and improve the out-of-the-box experience of home server solutions. Additional updates will occur over the lifespan of the product as we receive feedback from the user community, our hardware partners and software partners. Microsoft’s current plan is to make this update available as part of the monthly Windows Updates process in September.
HP has decided to include these first software updates in their MediaSmart Server. Both HP and Microsoft believe that these updates are in the best interest of potential customers and will insure the best out-of-the-box experience. All of our Windows Home Server partners and customers will automatically receive the update once posted to Windows Update.
Windows Home Server has come a long way from its inception, and we’re excited to deliver an integrated product that delivers on its full range of features, and is easy for everyone in the family to use and enjoy.

So reading between the lines MS and HP have found some kind of critical flaw in WHS and are waiting untill its fixed before releasing the product.

Ah I see, so is it something along lines of the newer cooling design for the Xbox 360 not being a fix for a design flaw but rather and "improvement and ehancement".

It does seem awfully quick for an update of "enhanced features". If it is usability improvements then they really should have been sorted before RTM not at this late stage. Doesn't really inspire too much confidence as the suspicion will be there that it is a bug fix that needed sorting urgently, HP may well have found something. Don't you love a good conspiracy theory LOL.
