WHS and Standby issues..

Hi all..

Anyone here able to put WHS in standby with no issues ?

I have been trying for ages now, but WHS keeps waking up for no reason every 25 - 30 minutes.
I have been disabling services left right and centre, but makes no difference.

Also, this problem is present even if the LAN is unplugged, which rules out WOL ( wake on lan ) issues.

I hope someone can help, as i have tried the WHS forum, but no-one seems to be interested in helping. They are more interested as to why i want to put it into standby in the first place.

Please do not ask me why i need to do this, as it is irrelevant.

Thank you

WHS is not designed to be put into standby, anything you try is irrelevent.

Re: WHS and Standby issues..

WHS is built around Windows Server 2003, The Server part of its name tells you everything you need to know about WHS and standby, as a server based OS its simply not designed to go into standby and stay that way because of all the critical services that run as sheduled events. If you disable the services WHS will no longer work but it might go into standby and stay that way. So your choice is to either have WHS or a machine that goes into standby but not both.

Re: WHS and Standby issues..

Ok.. well here's a thought.

Would it not be possible to have all the services stop on standby, and re-start when waking up ?

I do not accept that because it is a server it cannot be placed in standby.. ridiculous.

I understand that it is not designed to do so, but in all honesty it could be.. true ?

You could try, but Server 2003 doesn't have very good Power Management handling so if it ever successfully went to sleep there's a chance not all the hardware will wake up. It's more than just the ability to suspend that your trying to get working but also the ability to wake up and continue where it left off.

Why do you think it's ridiculous? It's based on a server OS that is specifically designed to give 24/7 uptime, MS did not worry about or put in features that are contrary to the idea of a 24/7 OS.

I think the concept is ridiculous... not windows itself.

Also, why would a company spend thousands or millions of dollars develloping a particular OS, and not remove functions that do not work ( like standby ) ? Doesn't make sense...

WHS RTM I believe was supposed to be based on the newer Vistsa version of the server OS which would have handled Standby BUT you know what MS and deadlines are like.

No, WHS RTM is based on Windows Server 2003 not the newer Vista version.

I thought I made it clear that I thought it was supposed to be and not actually is.

Re: WHS and Standby issues..

I was not sure you knew.
Edit: I see you said it was 2003 on the second post, I should read all the posts first
