Power saving assistance update, and greenhouse gas savings
From previous listing in March!
"A complete newbie here with WHS.
Just had WHS going for about a week, and it works really well with
central storage and automatic backing up of my network computers.
Re Power saving
I am aware that one of the major benefits of WHS is the central
storage, especially if you configure WHS to use data redundancy.
However it does not seem to be a good idea to be running the WHS 24/7
due to power consumption.
Is there a way that the WHS can be put into sleep mode and awaken upon
a LAN request on the network for the server. I realize that this may be
a little slower due to the time taken to awaken, but in my situation
that would not be a problem.
I would really appreciate any help that could be given to me! "
Update!!!!
I have had to start a new thread, as the old is no longer available for
comment!
I have now been using WHS with my home network and Vista MCE for 4
months.
Whilst it is going really well, I am still very concerned about it's
power consumption. I have been unable to reduce the power consumption
by wake on LAN etc, and it is running 24/7
I have measured the power consumption as 140 watts (a headless
installation"
This means that it is producing 1.2 tonnes of greenhouse gases per
year!
In my opinion this is a very poor useage of energy, and I would be very
willing to wait the necessary time for WHS to restart or resume from
sleep each time I need to access it!
I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL TO ANYONE WHO COULD HELP ME WITH THIS AND SAVE
SOME GREENHOUSE GASES!!
I would have thought that this would be a priority for Microsoft, as it
could potentially save millions of tonnes of greenhouse emissions, not
to memtion the personal cost savings!
