Install uTorrent as a WHS service

Just came across this and thought I'd save it here for future reference although it does seem a little complicated.

@ ExtremePC, I remember reading somewhere that you've set up uTorrent, if so, does it run as a service and was it easier to do than this method?

setup uTorrent as a WHS service

Re: Install uTorrent as a WHS service

Hi Mike,

Let me know if you have any trouble when trying it out, I tried to make it as easy as possible to follow. With any luck uTorrent or some other torrent client will actually make a WHS Add-in in the future to make life easier for the WHS target market.

Cheers,
Decipher.

Na, I just stuck a shortcut in the startup folder and it starts whenever WHS boots. I use the x-torrent plugin for xbmc as the front end for utorrent now too. Pretty soon I'll have the torrent renamer app finished as well.

Re: Install uTorrent as a WHS service

interesting. Not really relevant for my setup, but good to know nonetheless

I do use the webui. I like webUIs, keeping track of stuff when Im at uni/work on my pda or UMPC is quite handy.

Question Re: Install uTorrent as a WHS service

I might be missing something but wouldn't selecting "Start uTorrent on system startup" in the options perform the same function? If the only point is it have it automatically resume/startup on system re-boot?

Re: Install uTorrent as a WHS service

Hi Rumbaar,

You are missing something, but I'll forgive you The difference is that clicking "Start uTorrent on system startup" only works if you actually log into the machine as a user, but as Windows Home Server is intended to be a headless client it isn't intended for that kind og usage. Installing as a service means thats as long as the machine is on uTorrent is running.

Hope this clears things up for you.

lolz.....mine isnt headless, ive been playing FIFA 07 and Tiger Woods 07 every tuesday with mates for the last 3 weeks or so !! TW07 works great on it especially (not a vista happy game)

heck, if it can store all my TV and avis on it, why not me games

If I could figure out a way to install a game on the server but access when logged with client pc, then Id be happy.(save my from kvm switching)

Then it would truly be a media server

Re: Install uTorrent as a WHS service

Hi guys,

One of the WHS Forum members created a WHS Add-In to run uTorrent which will make the process a whole lot easier. I haven't tested and can't confirm that it works, but I'm sure the post would be filled with complaints if it didn't.
