Curiousity Didnt Kill The Cat: Gaming on WHS Rig
No biggie really, and perhaps no huge suprise for those more familiar with what server2k3 can do - just for those curious.
My WHS rig plugs directly into my MCE box rather than a router atm.
I like to keep the installation of extra programs on an mce box to a minimum so thought I might try pop some mid end games on the WHS rig that I like playing with mates on the big TV: FIFA 07, NHL 06 and Tiger Woods 07. I was curious to see what the rig could do.
To make my stay pleasant I started the themes service..because the classic theme is so damn ugly. Imported the royale theme from and mce05 rig and off i went.
Made sure I had the latest (non beta) nvidia drivers(93.71) which are ok for xp/server 2k3, and directX 9c incl updates til April.
Probably not what WHS is really meant to be used for but for the last 2 days we've been playing for hours on the WHS rig. No problems at all. Ive noticed rez cant go above 1024x768 but that is the max setting for games I'd use on a lightweight geforce 6200TC anyway. Works great, with usb controllers and the like....
Not sure if this is what I'd do on it if I ever purchase and use it as a dedicated mediaserver thingy. Although I could set up xp and have networked drives etc - the backup of the mce(and other network rigs if setup) is a real key feature that makes me lean towards WHS when it goes on sale...
Now I have absolutely no idea if I had installed any of the games to a shared directory, if I'd be able to access them from the mce rig(as they are connected by LAN) I do like the idea of the WHS rig being not just storage for media but games as well.... I might give it a go and find out later
