Just for passers by that may be interested in a real life story of WHS Recovery(happenned to me earlier today)
1. What I think caused it !?
I was fiddling around and the power cord (accidentally) came out whilst the machine was on.... when I restarted it have me a "system config file corrupt or missing" use installation cd to restore etc. Ive never had this happen in similar instanaces with xp or vista, maybe its a server 2003/WHS thang ?? I dunno.. If it wasnt this that caused it, it was a remarkable coincidence !
2. I put in installation DVD and let it go to setup > There was an option for "Reinstallation". It stated that the shared folder content will be preserved... I let it run...
Bits to remember to do:
*After some head scratching as to why I couldnt connect I realised my NIC adapter drivers needed to be reinstalled... (duh! Im a bit crook today so please excuse that slowness on my part)
*Connector CD stuff needed to be ran on other pcs. I tried doing the 'repair' option(from Vista) but it didnt work...(even though all the names and passwords were the same)
I went back into VistaMC and everything was all in there!! I was dreading having to do the folder setup song n dance but as long as everything is named the same it works fine.
I dont know how WHS works, whether it spreads your data over multiple drives but all I can comment from this experience is that all my stuff was intact including on the primary drive(once WHS was reinstalled) Im not sure what would happen if the primary drive physically fried but I'd hope to think you'd be able to merely replace that one and keep the whatever was on the others ones??
There was however
ONE GRIPE:
*The product key I installed with DID NOT allow me to activate this second time round(the activation wizard giving me a message about exceeding the amount of times I could use it)
*I couldnt be buggered calling MS, so I had to generate another key from MSConnect....As keys are limited, if this happens again(I hope not!!) I probably would call them...
I think I need to hassle my server geek buddies to 'loan' me a copy of Acronis True Image for Servers.... (Im assuming it will work with this server2003 based OS) ?? I wonder if Norton Ghost would work ??
Anyway, now its fixed -- I can get back to watching four seasons of 'Scrubs' I had on there
