Lester WHS build

Hi,

I've finaly installed my WHS Beta on the following hardware:
AMD X2 3600+
ASUS M2NVP-MX
RAM 1gb DDR2
VIDEO 6150 onboard
160gb IDE
200gb SATA
320gb SATA

On install, the machine restarted numerous times but failed to install network driver and SMbus driver. Installed those and grabbed a windows update (critical) and then restarted headless.

I then installed the connect software on my XP Pro (main internet machine), Vista HP & MCE 2005 machines and setup usernames & backup. All works well.

I added the 320gb drive after install, without any problems at all. I then played with remote desktop, the WHS console and login via web browser. All worked fine.

I am currently adding pictures, music & movies. I intend to setup streaming to see if my old D-Link DSM-320 connects to the server, just as a test. The xbox with XBMC looks good too, as I've already read about here

I haven't activated yet, as I might move WHS onto another box, but so far, it all looks pretty good.

One thing I was wanting to do, was being able to record from Vista HP straight to the server. So I can watch the recordings from anywhere in the house. Anyone tried this yet?

Lester

Re: Lester WHS build

Update:

The D-Link DSM-320 does connect to the WHS OK, when folders are running in streaming mode.

I have had a look and cant find a way at the moment - recording storage location in Vista doesnt pick up the WHS. Have scanned the MS WHS site and TGB and elsewhere but no luck.
I guess an automated script to copy any recordings from Vista to WHS overnight might have to do.
Coma.

To save writing the script have a look for the little app Monster wrote called MoveIT. Does exactly what you're after

Cheers,

Matt.

Re: Lester WHS build

Does mapping the Network share as a drive letter not let you record to it???

i remember with my NetGear SC101 i could do it, as it installs a Virtual SCSI drive for the networked drives...

Doesnt seem to. Nothing other than the HTPC drives come up as options. Even worse when I copy all my recorded tv to the WHS folder and set the XBOX360 to watch the folder, the recorded tv shows up in videos rather than recored tv so you dont get the nice preview and show description. So even if we move shows to the server using Moveit it still isnt quite right.

Re: Lester WHS build

Hi,

Bit of an update: (nothing wrong with WHS, more so, nForce 4 & RAM)
I had a single stick of 1gb Lemel RAM in the server and wanted to move to dual channel, because I can! I installed two 512mb sticks of Corsair Value DDR2 RAM into the correct slots for dual channel and ran a memtest from my linux live CD. All passed no problems.

I started WHS again and let it run, but I thought I could hear it restarting. It was, with a lovely blue screen!!

I think I have run into the same problem that slimf ran into the other day with his motherboard. The Corsair was single sided RAM and doesn't seem to run nice in dual channel mode. He read some where that they recommended them to be installed side by side.

Old RAM back in...all is happy.

Lester

Playing Pre-Recorded TV from WHS or Recording Live TV to WHS .
Works for Vista , MCE 2005 and Xbox360.
If you do not need to record live TV to the WHS, and just need it to store the recorded TV files and play from WHS, you can miss out "Recording Live TV to WHS" but you will still need the Batch file on the WHS.

All Recorded TV stored on the WHS will show in "Recorded TV" on Vista or MCE 2005 and in "Recorded TV" in MCE UI on the Xbox360 .

On the WHS you need to enable media sharing on the Music, Photos and Videos shares. You can do that by clicking on the Gear icon in the top right of the WHS Console, then click on the Shared Folders.

Then setup a Guest Account with no password, this will be so you can see the recorded TV from WHS on your Xbox360 in Media Center UI under "Recorded TV".

From WHS Console add a share folder call "Recorded TV" to WHS default shared folders.

Settings for Windows Home Server
1 In Run, type "gpedit.msc", then click OK .
Then go to Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security Options
Find the entry "Network access: Let Everyone permissions also apply to anonymous users", double click and set to "Enabled" .

2 Click Start, Run, and type "regedit", and click OK.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\lanmanserver\parameters
Double click the NullSessionShares key, and add the value "Recorded TV" at the end of the existing entries, then click OK.
3 Reboot WHS.
Log on back on to WHS right click the shared "Recorded TV" folder then go to Properties Click on the Share and Security tab then Permissions add "Anonymous Logon" click "Full Control" box then click on OK.
4 Log off DO NOT REBOOT WHS the Share Permissions and Security Permissions will be removed if you reboot, there is a batch file to fix the problem see below ).

Settings for MCE 2005 or Vista .
On Vista or MCE 2005 Run, "regedit".
1 Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording
Double click the "WatchedFolders" key
Add the UNC path of WHS shared folder. \\Server\Recorded TV
2 Reboot the MCE 2005 or if you have Vista reboot that.

Recording Live TV to WHS
For Vista or MCE 2005
1 If you need to record live TV to WHS here is the setting go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording
Double click the "RecordPath" key
then add \\Server\Recorded TV
2 Reboot the MCE 2005 or if you have Vista reboot that.

Batch file Fix for Anonymous Logon after WHS Reboots.
These settings where needed because if WHS reboots, the Share Permissions and Security Permissions will be removed.

Copy and Paste the batch file into notepad and save it as "whs.bat" DO NOT save it as a text file, add the batch file to WHS startup menu.

Now if WHS reboots the batch well reset all the Share Permissions and Security Permissions for recorded TV folder.
Here is the Batch file I made below (Copy and Paste it).
--------------------------------------------------
@ECHO OFF
net share "Recorded TV" /Delete
net share "Recorded TV"="D:\Shares\Recorded TV" /GRANT:Everyone,FULL
ECHO Y| cacls "D:\shares\Recorded TV" /G "Anonymous logon":F "Everyone":F "Administrators":F "CREATOR OWNER":F
end
----------------------------------------------------
Ps: Thanks to Ian Dixon mce mvp who has also been working on this.

Re: Lester WHS build

Hi Richard,

Does the bat file run if the WHS boots but no one logs in?

Thanks,
Lester

Re: Lester WHS build

The batch file only runs at start up. if the WHS reboot or the wife pulls the plug or power cut, Thats only reason I made the batch file is the Permissions would change in the "Recorded TV" folder on WHS if it rebooted.

Re: Lester WHS build

OK...I found my problem.

I was trying to add DVB Webscheduler recordings in DVR-MS to my Recorded TV watched folders, but found out the DVR-MS produced by DVB Webscheduler don't have the meta data Windows is after, so they seem to be ignored.

Please Mr null_pointer find a way to do it, then my life would be perfect
I would donate $100 if it was done...

Lester
