OK so after a few false starts I have my build working pretty well.
The hardware:
Gigabyte EG43M-S2 mobo
E6600 CPU (from my desktop)
8600GT card (from my desktop)
2GB Corsair RAM (from my desktop)
Pioneer DVR-216BK
2 x WD7500AACS
2 x Nova T 500 (1 from my desktop, 1 new)
Antec NSK2480 case
Vista Ultimate 32bit
Pioneer PDP507XDA plasma
Got the rig all together, and then I noticed the passive cooled 8600GT I had for it wouldn't f#$&*^%^ fit in the case, so I tried to get it working with onboard graphics but I could NOT get acceptable picture quality with xvids upscaling to 720p, so I opted for a passively cooled 8400GS for $59 and slotted that in.
Hardware build was very simple - but that NSK2480 case with these hard drives is SOOOO quiet, more than once I turned it off at the back when it was running.... VERY happy with the shopping list for this rig...
The build went smoothly, apart from the 8600GT issue. Surprised that I couldn't get a good enough picture with the Intel, it was quite blocky, and I've never been happy with FFDShow scaling.
I'm not smart enough for a full pull down of the build but here's what I'm running on the rig:
Cyberlink PowerDVD 8
DVB Web Scheduler Pro
FFDShow rev 2156
Haali Media Splitter
Intel Matrix Storage Manager
Nvidia latest release drivers
Play Movie
XxiD 1.1.3 Final release
That's it. I am using the CyberLink video decoder for live TV, FFDShow for xvid/divx, and CyberLink decoder for full hardware assisted h264 1080p decoding. Had some sync issues earlier but have them sorted now.
I'm just sorting file structure etc, that is a work in progress.
Now the reason I have DVB Web Scheduler: MCE's capturing is ass. DVB WS is $30 and it kicks it to hell. What it doesn't do at present is stick the TV in Recorded TV. That's my next challenge. For now I'm capturing in CyberLink muxed MPEG2 files, editing and archiving in h264. If I can get DVB WS caps to show in Recorded TV I will switch to DVR-MS caps.
DVB WS is much more flexible than MCE particularly with the way TV stations screw around with program times deliberately now. Plus it can use one tuner to capture any number of programs from the same mux, so if you want to record Ten Digital and Ten HD, it only takes one tuner. So 4 tuners means I can record as much as I want and still watch live TV.
I think the funniest thing is I researched and planned this build all along with this website, and even bookmarked threads - but the minute I started the build in earnest, the forum went down!!!
Comments/questions?

Anyway last night I did my first capture of one channel while viewing another, and things were not rosy. For maybe 5 minutes or so, the live channel went choppy, and when I played the capture it had clearly lost data.
Surely this system can manage to capture one stream while watching live as well?

I think you were missed in the post site upgrade/NSW public holiday period.
Interesting about the onboard graphics - same as what I saw with the G35 when I had it a while back.
Give FFDShow another look & look at the deblocking/post processing as well as the scaling - you can get pretty amazing results with 350MB AVIs.
Shame about the 8600, but the 8400 should be up to the job - onboard 8200s handle it fine.
Instead of getting DVBWS to capture to the Recorded TV folder, you can just add the loaction as a "More TV" location in VMC. Would need to capture as DVR-MS though. Also, the DVBWS temp folder should be kept well clear of VMC.
The stutter is unlikely to be a hardware limitation - do you know that your split signal is good enough? Also, running 2 x Nova T 500s in one system used to be trouble, you might need to try & do some IRQ shuffling (not easy without changing slots... which you can't do).

Edit: 5000th post! Woohoo!

DVB WS can capture in DVR-MS with no problems, but it seems to take more CPU time to mux DVR-MS than it does to mux MPG with the CyberLink muxer. So might revert to all captures to MPG with DVB WS and hopefully it will go better.

I haven't split the signal yet, this signal is as I have fed the TV for ages and I've not seen any artefacting on the TV at all. Doesn't mean its not the problem but it was very localised.
Not what I wanted to hear re the 2 x Nova T - but at the moment only one of them is actually active, so hopefully this isn't a problem?
