Question Annoying things that my Media Center does

Media Center will be maximised and I can be looking at anything, the guide, my list of recorded TV shows, and the windows task bar will continuously keep appearing, taking control away from Media Center. It will take only about 3 to 5 minutes of inactivity for it to appear.

I will have to get my mouse and click back on Media Center to be able to use my remote again...Its pretty annoying. This has only started happening recently.

Another issue: I will watch a recording, and if I don't delete it when it is finished or when I stop it and I minimise Media Center, the recording will start from the beginning again. That gets pretty annoying as well. I will have to keep pressing stop if I minimise or maximise Media Center. Most of the time when this happens I need to close down and re-open the software.

Are these regular problems?
Thanks in advance.

Do you MCE set to "Windows Media Centre window always on top" in Settings / General / Startup and Windows Behaviour?

Was the June Cumulative update, KB950126, pushed out to you? If so, uninstall it and it will fix the restarting issue.

Re: Annoying things that my Media Center does

I also find when I minimise the video I previously played will start again. It generally isnt a concern in general use, except when I am playing around with the setup etc - can get annoying meaning I shut down VMC each time I need to go back to windows.

Will check for the June update as advised above and remove and see if it fixes the issue. Fingers crossed.

I had this problem as well, but in my case it was always exactly one minute for the task bar to appear on top of VMC.

Restarting windows always fixes the problem.

Then a number of days later it would happen again - I eventually figured out what was causing it - it always happened after I'd used VLC to view a video.

I now avoid using VLC on my HTPC, and I've not had the taskbar problem since.

Re: Annoying things that my Media Center does

Thank you very much everybody!

You have made my media center experience much more pleaseurable!

The task bar problem is still there, but like Adrian Said, it only appears after I watch a video. Pressing Pause and play again will gey rid of it, but I am going to play with the setting in the Task Bar Properties "Keep the task bar on top of other windows" in Vista Ultimate and see if that changes anything.

Hey out of Interest, what is "VLC"? Adrian made mention of it?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Annoying things that my Media Center does

VLC is a media player. It is great to use as an alternative to the main players on the market as it uses its own codec or should I say way to decode the video files. Will often play those files that will not play in others.

Pretty good player - can be found here. Saying that, I dont use it at all with VMC. It is purely used on my system as a backup player through Windows.

This is true for all my installations (Various Ultimate 64) and I believe all others. It certainly occured some while ago before any recent updates, and is not a result of ffdshow or any other addons. This occurs for videos of various sorts, but not recorded TV. It is a result of two bugs. One is that when you tell a video to stop, Vista MC doesn't believe you could possibly want to do this and keeps it in Now Playing with a stop symbol by it. Then it also forgets you told it to stop, and so when you minimise MC window or do a variety of other things it starts randomly playing again in Poltergeist fashion.

The rather annoying workaround to this is, after playing any video, briefly go to live TV and exit, or play a few seconds of a recorded TV file. This resets things, MC forgets the now playing file, and, as mentioned above this stupidity does not occur for TV/Recorded TV and so you have a clean slate with nothing playing.

If you do not do that, it is also possible for other things to kick start playback, and next thing you notice is that you have been playing a file continuously for the whole week while you are away, preventing sleep, and lining the pockets of the power companies.

Of course it would be better if this problem were fixed properly. MS seem to forget that rubbish that people put up with on a computer are just not acceptable for a media interface.

I have a similar problem.

After several minutes, taskbar appears on a full screen media center with a right-corrupted background (around the last tenth MC display).

First I thought it was caused by a Windows Sidebar gadget, but it's not the case.

The KB950126 patch is always installed.

I don't see where is the cause.

Thanks.
