Slow network with Media Centre running?

It's been bugging me for a while but finally decided to post and seek some help/advice.

If I start up media centre and then try to copy files across to the media centre box my transfer speed is ~1/3 of that when media centre is not running. No shows are being recorded or played. It's just sitting doing "nothing" at the GUI.

Anyone know of a solution? Is it just me or do you also have the same issue whereby network transfers to the box slow down alot once you bring up the GUI?

Re: Slow network with Media Centre running?

Haven't seen that - I had a live HD show on that was recording as well (not that it doesn't normally, but you know what I mean) & was copying 100GB of DVR-MS to the Recorded TV folder at the same time - good speeds. When the copy finished, I had an HD show open on a remote PC & was editing it via VideoReDo - all seemed fine.

Do you have other Recorded TV locations that are monitored? If so, it might be scanning them.

Nope. No extenders either. I wonder if you tried closing the media centre and copy a file to it in comparison to when it's open. You say you get "good" speeds but perhaps you can do much better

It's weird. I didn't really pay to much attention until my brother bought it up because he noticed it on his system (different network/hardware everything to mine) and sure enough with the media centre gui running speed is 1/3 of what it is when it's closed.

Re: Slow network with Media Centre running?

I've heard of others having slow transfers when MCE is open.... not sure of a solution, but I know it's not your imagination.

I could try, but a sustained 45MB/sec over my gigabit network is pretty much the norm - it took about 38 minutes I think.

Have you tried something like terracopy? And are you using SP1?

Yep all patched and SP upgraded. Doing a bit more reading it seems the MMCSS might be a culprit and throttling the network down. I've changed the throttling in the registry and will see how it goes. Currently out of diskspace (doh) so need to start watching some stuff .

do this

start-> administration tools -> services -> multimedia class scheduler -> disabled
regedit
HKLM > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > AudioSrv key

There’s a string value called DependOnService. By default, the value has three entries: AudioEndpointBuilder, RcpSs, and MMCSS. Remove MMCSS.

reboot

then your netowork speed is not affected when MCE is launched.
