guys, I was thinking this was a lack of CPU power until I read a few other posts on here. I've got a fairly clean VMC install albeit with FFDshow and Mymovies installed. I notice when I'm watching SD my CPU usage is reasonably high, but as soon as I switch to HD, it goes to 100%. This means I have no hope of ever watching HD while recording even SD or vice versa. Even sometimes when I'm watching SD and recording SD I still get the odd jitter. I presume my Geforce 7600GS is up to the task, so what gives? Is FFDshow the culprit here?
Kinda hard to tell you anything without knowing the specs of your machine.... sure your CPU can max out on SD playback if your using a P4, but are you?
FFDShow isn't being used for television playback so that's not your issue.
oops, sorry, I didn't realise that my media centre wasn't showing up on the left. Umm basically it's a P4 2.4ghz, ASRock P4i65GV with 768mb RAM, Geforce 7600GS (512mb), Vista Home Premium. Think that pretty much covers it, basically a fresh install SP1 but with FFDshow and Mymovies
1. Your CPU will be doing all the work. You might be able to lower a bit of the overhead by getting yourself a video card that can do dxva decoding, but I think you might be struggling as your board doesn't appear to have a PCI-e x16 slot for the card.
2. RAM is too limited, Vista is ok with 1GB but 2GB is optimal.
All in all, I think you'll be better off researching a new mobo/cpu/ram combo, and putting together a new machine for cheap.
edit: You could also go into Control Panel - Power options and selecting High Power or whatever it's called. By default vista sets the max CPU usage at 50%, this sets it at 100%.
okay, the least I can do is bump the RAM up. Oh I forgot to mention also that my tuner card is a Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-T 500 MCE. I've bumped my power options up to 100% already. Still only a noobie at HTPC's tho so learning as I go
