VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

Hi there

I have been having this problem for a while and since I reinstalled vista it has got a whole lot worse.

What has been happening is that during playback (recored TV) the system will freeze and become non responsive with the HDD light solid, I will press the remote several times and nothing will happen. about 1 min later the system wakes up and performs all the functions that I pressed on the remote. normally after resuming from freezing during playback the audio will continue and the video will skip and then progress frame by frame until they are in sync.

I did a little research and have tried to set the power options for the HDD to never spin down (did not fix the problem).

This problem is not isolated to playback it will also happen during routine computer use.

It seems to be one of those vista quirks.

Please help it is realy anoying my wife (and therefore me)

Bigwoof can you post specs of your machine. We at least need to know what your system comprises of, as well as any codec packages or third party software you may have loaded.

I had the same issue. Depending on your HDD controller, you may want to check for a new driver.

Just a thought.

Re: VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

Hi there

Sorry I didn't include the specs in the first post.
It is a pre-built machine, the Asus asteio D22 for full specs see the url:
http://au.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=...77&modelmenu=2

It is only 6 months old

I have just reinstalled vista and the only other thing I have loaded is the free epg. other then the pre installed software:
PowerDVD7
and the Asus easy updater, wireless controller, etc

I will have a look at updating the HDD controller and let you know if it helps.

cheers

Phil

Re: VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

When ever something like this happens, I like to look at the "Event Viewer".

Look in "Administrator events"

More often than not there are some logged events occurring at the time of the problem.

Re: VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

I've just found this

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...9144&SiteID=17

There's plenty of people who are experiencing your issue in some form or another.

There's a registry hack that some have had success with.

http://www.flyingnerd.com/intel-raid...windows-vista/

Hopefully this points you in the right direction.

Re: VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

Even though your pc is only 6 months old, I would check if your motherboard bios is the most recent and upgrade that first.

I edited my previous post to include a link to the registry hack that disables LPM.

Re: VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

Try this: http://www.intel.com/support/chipset.../cs-025783.htm

Installing the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver mentioned there worked for me (I had the exact same problem, very annoying).

Re: VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

WilsonJ,

Did you install the Nvidia storage manager (Or something like that) off the disk that came with the mobo?

I did, and I think it might install some different drivers for the hard drives? Maybe this could be an issue?

are you 32bit or 64bit?

Re: VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

Hi Guys...I have a Dav 22 as well and same problem has started occuring over the past week. I thought it might have been something to do with my install of MCE Buddy but not so sure seeing these posts.

I'll do a restore and see if that fixes the problem...

Re: VIsta stops responding with solid Hard drive light

Nobes, I don't think that was on the install disc with the gigabyte board I have. I will check though.
