I have a Vista MCE running Home Premium. I am using a Grundig CRT as my display. As a TV/viewing platform it is great. As a monitor it is pure c***.
So, I have installed Remote Desktop with the Home Patch as described elsewhere on this forum.
I want to access my desktop via my XP Media Center SP2 laptop.
I can access my laptop from my MCE, but not the other way around. What do I have to do (apart from throwiing the whole lot thru' the window).
I can set up a connection to the laptop from either the laptop or the MCE - but I can't set it up the other way. It is now 3:15pm, and I started this at 4am - I am truly unimpressed at the moment.
Where do I go from here?

Check to see if the firewall is active in your MCE box. If it is, disable it and retry.
If successful after disabling it, reenable the firewall but choose less restrictive settings
or leave it disabled if you are certain the there are no other "paths" to it that are unwanted.
However, I still don't know what to do on my Laptop (XP Media Center Edn - SP2) to get the RDP up and running - where do I go too kick it off??
You mean to start the connection to the Vista PC? If you don't have the Remote Desktop Client update, then it will be under Start>All Programs>Accessories>Communications>Remote Desktop
This is why I need to talk to someone.
I have the VISTA Settings as follows:
Allow Remote Assistance cennections to this computer (in systems properties/Remote TAB) is selected.
When I click on Advnaced I have Invitations set for a max. of 12 hours, and I do NOT have the "Create invitations that can only be used from computers running Windows Vista or later" box checked.
But How do I start it on my laptop (XP Media Centre Edn SP2) - when I type in Remoste Desktop in Help and Support there (this machine), I get lots of info regarding how to allows other PC's to control this laptop. But I want this laptop to bring up the desktop from my VISTA MCE, so I can read it.

Also be aware that even if you manage to remote desktop from your laptop to your MCE box, you won't be able to use Media Center remotely from you laptop.

Remote assistance connections isn't remote desktop. If you've gone through & followed the hack instructions from Missing Remote, Remote desktop should be enabled.

As per my last post.

Also, you haven't said whether or not you're using Vista SP1 - this is a very important distinction! If so, you need the SP1 version of trmsrv.dll. You can download it here.
Have a look at this post for getting Remote Desktop Host working on Vista SP1.

Assistance/ Desktop - I'm sorry if I've n\muddled the terminology.
Situation:
I have a MCE Vista Home Premium system that runs beautifuly as a Home Theatre on my Grundig CRT Digital TV.
However, whenI need to use the Destop to set up stuff and perform admin tasks, I can't see the writing becvause the resolution is crap.
Solution (I thought)
Run Remote Desktop from the Vista MCE to my XP Media Centre Edn SP2 Laptop, so that my family can continue to watch TV/DEVs etc, whilst I fiddle on my laptop to tweak it. I don't care how that is done, I just need it done.
Approach:
I though it was a matter of setting Remote Desktop, which as I am running VISTA Home Premium, would need a patch on the MCE. I did this.
Problem:
What do I do on the Laptop in order to get it to control the MCE desktop?
I think the setting on the MCE are OK, but what do I do to turn it on on the Laptop? I understand that RD should be already in the XP OS, but when I look for help on the supbject, all I get is guff telling me how to allow another machine to control my laptop. I WANT TO USE THE LAPTOP TO VIEW AND MIDIFY ITEMS ON THE MCD DESKTOP.
I thought that wasn't too hard, but perhaps my command of the English language has fallen off a bit - I've been at this for 12 hours, and am very frustrated. If you guys can't help, tell me where I can go to get some help, and I'll get out of your hair.

Alison, I understand your frustration. If you've been at this since 4AM, then you've put in a marathon. My advice right now is to take a break. You need to get away from the screen for a while and clear your head.
The other thing to remember is Vista Premium is NOT supposed to do RDC. You are dealing with a hack and so the set up and installation is not as neat and tidy as it could be. It requires a degree of patience and lnow-how to get going. It's not hard, just not click and go.
Take a break, check here regularly and I'm sure a fix will become clear.

Have you installed THIS application on your laptop?
You need to install that application, and then go into Programs - Accessories and select Remote Desktop Connection. Enter the IP address or computer name and hit connect.
