Talking Remote Desktop to MCE from XP Laptop - HELP

I have Visata MCE - working fine. However, as I have a Grundig CRT TV, my admin functions are difficult to say the least. So it was recommended in this forum somewhere, that I use Remote Desktop. However, as I have Home Premium, I have had to hack.

I've attempted to do that, and want to try RDP from my XP Laptopn (on which I am typing now), and I can set RDP up on the laptop to give control to the MCE, and I can set the MCE up to take control of the laptop, but HOW DO I TAKE CONTROL OF THE MCE FORM THE LAPTOP!!

Where do I go to set it up. Everything I've read says that it is too easy. But even searching on help, only lets me set it up the wrong way.....

I rapidly tearing my hair out here.......

cheers,
Alison

Re: Remote Desktop to MCE from XP Laptop - HELP

There are a number of potential errors along the way in getting remote desktop happening in Vista HP. For starters, there are different files for pre & post SP1 & UAC can make it tough to install (as you need to change permission on some files).

Have a look at this link & read through some of the responses : http://www.unet.fi/fransblog/2007/08...-home-premium/

something that I wasted a week to figure out with VMC . you cant have an empty admin password on on the host (machine you want to control). keeps giving some cryptic code about authentication not working?

Re: Remote Desktop to MCE from XP Laptop - HELP

Hi,

Something you can try using is 'Real VNC'

http://www.realvnc.com/products/download.html

Iv'e never used remote desktop, but i use realvnc to control my htpc from another computer, and it works great. If you can get the full version it works even better.

goodluck...

Thats right, its a security feature to stop anonymous logons.

Best to set up your HTPC with a separate account for day to day running and enable autologon. Keep the admin account for RDP access. With the hack RDP you can logon and do stuff whilst someone is using VMC on the other account

Thumbs up Re: Remote Desktop to MCE from XP Laptop - HELP

Yes thanks Guys. I resolved my Remote Desktop issues last week, many thanks to you all.
I'll be posting my "plain English" explanation of the steps I went through in an effort to help all other non-techos wade through the mire...

Cheers, Alison
