Unhappy Blue Screen on Resume from S3 - new Build Giga-byte EP45 DS3

Hi from Melbourne,

I've found the forum tremendously useful over the years.
Recently decided to upgrade the Media Centre from an old AMD 3200+ setup to complement a new plasma. It was starting to become slow and clunky.

New Setup...
E8400
Giga-byte EP45 DS3
4 Gig 800MHz Ram Kingston
Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1
8500GT 256MB
E700 Compro dual Tuner
Silverstone LC 17
Thermaltake 600W power supply

My problem is resuming from sleep.
On resume I get an Blue screen error message
I don't get the message if I set the Bios Sleep setting to S1
Very Frustrating as the old rig worked seamlessly in this regard.

Things I've tried...
I've updated bios
Reinstalled Graphics Driver
Reinstalled Chipset Driver
Tried heaps of different Bios Settings
Cleared CMOS
Tried to turn hybrid sleep off

An interesting observation...
If I resume from S3 from the windows desktop - there's a delay before I get the the blue screen. Then it comes shortly after I start an application eg Internet Explorer.
However on resume from S3 from the Media Centre interface, the blue screen is almost immediate.

I really would appreciate any help. It'd be great to get this issue sorted before the Olympics start!

What OS were you running on the old setup?

Sounds like it's a bios issue. Have you submitted a bug report to gigabyte?
You may have to do a 'bare bones' install of vista 64 to see if it still happens. If so then it's more than likely a mb bug and easily replicated by gigabyte.
If not, then add hardware and drivers one at a time till it does it again.

Seems like if an app is launched, or one is already running [vmc] then a crash occurs.

You could try as a test, dropping back to 2gb of ram and see what happens.

Re: Blue Screen on Resume from S3 - new Build Giga-byte EP45 DS3

Thanks for the advice
Last night did a clean install

S3 and remote work great when I've installed windows w/o updates.

But when I apply the first round of updates (approx 60 of them) the S3 trouble starts. This time when I attempt to resume from S3 the LEDs etc come on but not the screen etc. need to do reset to recover. I've got no idea which of the updates is responsible. It would take for ever to install them individually.

From the prior install earlier in the week - putting SP1 over the top didn't help.

Is there a way I can go direct to SP1 without the initial updates?

Thanks

Re: Blue Screen on Resume from S3 - new Build Giga-byte EP45 DS3

service packs are a roll-up of all prior updates, so you can install the OS then sp1 only, no need for other individual updates.
If after just these two installs, the same problem occurs then you will need to advise gigabyte of the problem.

If your really keen, you can even make yourself a new OS disc with sp1 integrated by using Vlite, though there is one hideous 1.37Gb download of WAIK that you need to get from MS for vlite to work properly.

I've done it with my vista 32, works great, you can even tailor the OS to your liking

This appears to be a common issue with recent Gigabyte motherboards and Vista sp1 (x64 in particular, although x86 and even XP also seem to suffer). I have the issue on a Gigabyte P43 S3L board.

See the gigabyte forums in tweaktown http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/

Beware of resuming computer ahead of powering on monitor/panel. The graphics card may request edid from the monitor and not get it so then defaults to 800 x 600 vga which may be out of frequency range for your monitor/panel.

Re: Blue Screen on Resume from S3 - new Build Giga-byte EP45 DS3

Thanks - monitor remains on the whole time

Still no luck

Very annoying when you spend money on new technology that doesn't work - especially compared to my old AMD 3200 setup.

Not sure what to do from here.
Tried to contact gigabyte but I have to take out the motherboard to get the serial number stuck underneath.

Judging from a recent post I just read, I would be looking at the RAM.

Re: Blue Screen on Resume from S3 - new Build Giga-byte EP45 DS3

Abandoned EP45 motherboard
Used the 965p ds3p board I was using as my desktop
Works fine now

Only one hitch
If I go into S3 whilst watching TV - on resume - black screen
This disappears if I press live TV or the green Button.

Another issue is ++ delay on starting a divx move from my videos (ie minutes). Zero delay if viewed from WMP.

Thanks

I've had the delay prob as well on my setup, though not that severe [vista32 and vista32 sp1].
Try going to msconfig [sart > type run > enter > type msconfig > enter] and disable "Windows remote management [WS-management]" in the services tab.
There's a few other services that also stopped the problem for me, but try that one first.

Superfetch is another pest service for htpc that causes excessive hdd activity after a restart.

Gigabyte has posted some new BIOS updates that resolve the BSOD after S3 sleep for the EP43 & 45 motherboards
