quick question: turn off VGA

hi,
Im having trouble, when my vista 64 bit system starts up, and my TV is NOT turned on, i think it reverts to VGA mode, i have DVI and VGA out in my motherboard, and if i start HTPC with TV ON all is OK. it appears to auto detect mode, as i put on another TV and it reset automatically(1080p) then back to 720p for my LG 42" LCD with dhmi>dvi connection.

cheers,
tack

Re: quick question: turn off VGA

The HDMI connection between your TV and PC does some handshaking when it starts up to determine the optimum resolution for the display. When the TV is off this doesn't happen and the PC reverts to the lowest setting - VGA. This problem is well known with many TV/video card combinations and has been fixed by video card driver updates in some instances. Please provide more information on the hardware you are running if you want any help with this - we can't help if we don't know your setup.

I used to have this issue on my machine. If I turned my plasma on first and then turned on the media center, I would get a picture. The only exception to this was if the machine had turned itself on at some point to do a guide update or scheduled task when I wasnt awake or home. Whenever that happened I would never get a picture even if I turned the screen on first.

If I ever turned the media center on first and then the TV I would never get a picture (see the comment above for clarification of that).

The reason being is that EDID which is what is transmitted when the computer turns on is sent to the screen and they handshake to determine the capabilities of the screen. If the screen isnt on then the handshake doesnt happen (this was the same on my old Nvidia card and also the ATI after I swapped). My machine would assume that if it didnt get a response from the DVI port during the handshake, nothing was attached and as a result it would disable the port as it (stupidly) presumed that the VGA port would be used.

What I did to get round it was purchase a unit called the DVI Detective. This unit plugs inbetween my computer and plasma and continuously sends the EDID info to the computer.

As a result, I can now turn anything on in any order and I always get a picture. I reboot the PC during the night as a scheduled task and regardless I always get a picture when I next turn it on to watch TV. The reason is that the DVI Detective has continually sent the EDID and so my computer believes there is something attached and doesnt switch to VGA.

I know there have been many variations on this but for a lot of people this was a fix. I wonder if the newer TV's always send an EDID signal even when off which fixed the problem.

All I know is, I no longer have the issue which is all I was concerned about back in the day.

Here is the Gefen website that explains about the DVI Detective and what it does. This is an american site so dont try and order from them.

Here is where I bought mine from in Oz......I presume they still sell them. I could never find them on their website so I would probably give them a call and ask if they still do them and how much they are.
