Antivirus & Firewall?
this thread has 32 replies and has been viewed 970 times
I was just wondering what people are running as their AV and firewall on the VMCE setups.
I was running Kaspersky Internet Security but for some reason that has decided it doesn't want to install on my new setup. So I'm relying on AVG Free and the windows firewall.

But now we are faced with a new and very troubling assault on our fiscal security, on our very economic life - and we are facing it from a thing called the video cassette recorder. - MPAA on the VCR 1982
None. My VMC is media centre only and will only go to the web for guide updates and (very occassionally) windows updates, so I don't need firewall or anti-virus. (It is behind a hardware firewall though)
There have been other threads about this that got some people very hot under the collar about the fact you should always have something due to the script kiddies out there etc etc etc.
Personally, I haven't run one on my machine for an absolute age and whether it be because I am a golden child, or just the fact that my machine updates the guide, windows updates and nothing more, I havent been adversely affected.
I too have a hardware firewall built into my router.
I do occasionally use IE to visit this and other support sites. Recently during an update I got a funny message in IE suggesting that I might have a bit of adware.
I dont run any resident AV on any of my Vista machines, but I use the inbuilt firewall. All my machines are clean because every month or so I run the Nod32 or trend online scanner and they come up as clean.
some simple security advice, if you use windoze IE to connect to the internet, even if behind a SPI firewall, then you will need a good AV, as the http get request headers will advertise the fact that you've got a security compromised browser and OS.
Suggestion, use firefox instead, but still use decent AV and decent SPI firewall.

Let's face facts, hell will freeze over before M$ ever make a sound and secure browser and OS, and there are simply too many anti M$ out there that will always hack away....
I use the Windoze firewall + NAV Corp Ed v10 (My AV on all pcs's is fully managed by my Server).
