Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

Not that I'm a VMC user - *don't throw anything at me for using MCE2005 - but just on the AV's + firewall etc.

A lot of people are saying AVG....but recent AV testing had AVG performing really badly - so much so I ditched the legit Pro version I had of it.

Best detection results for FREE AVs are from Avira - but it doesn't have a real time scanner - not a big deal on a dedicated HTPC. Avast is also a good one.

If money's no object Kaspersky or Nod32.

Firewall? Dedicated should be fine.....if you feel you want more Comodo is the best firewall going - paid or Free and its FREE! Has cleaned up leak tests for a while now.

Turn all the warnings down and turn off the HIPS 'Defence' and its very low intrusive.

yea, i've see that aswell...i had to clean up the uncle's computer. His AVG was running and scanning and wouldn't find anything...plugged in his HDD as a slave and scanned with AVAST and found ~6 viruses...i know that thats pretty common (ie, different antivirus programs pick up different sets of viruses...) but it fits with my experiance

well, we'll have to move to AVG 8, cause AVG will soon no longer provide updated virus definition files for v7.5
