Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

I run antivirus on all my other PCs and they are behind a firewall. I also know how I got the trojan.

I like to keep my VMC very lean.

Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

Well Kaspersky just refuses to install. The unit boots but the desktop won't come up. I get the Vista loading screen, the Vista orb thingy and then just a black screen.

Load a previous image without Kaspersky and its fine.

Anyhoo, I've installed AVG free with the windows firewall. The box is behind a NAT router and the only internet stuff it does is download the guide so I figure its safe, and there's always my Acronis backups if things get messed up.

Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

I think it depends very much on your behaviour, if you have a dedicated media only machine and don't use it to access the web other than updates, guide info etc then the NAT firewall in your router will be all you need. If you do surf the net then that's a different story.

Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

I second avast- it's free and does the job brilliantly without being a resource hog.

I also use windows defender (free) and windows firewall (built in)

Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

I like many others here work in corporate IT, and in general you would never run a machine without AV. Av and Spy protection is a large part of my job.

But I never run AV on my HTPC's simply because its just another thing that can make them ustable.
The other reason is that there is no critical data on them. Only movies, tv recordings, pics (which are backed up) and music. All this stuff is replaceable, and the OS is imaged for quick recovery.
AV protection is really only about downtime and data loss or corruption.
The need to keep the HTPC dead clean outweighs the need for possible downtime and data corruption, as the HTPC is not generally mission critical.
With a little bit of care in use and a hardware firewall, this downtime is extremely minimal

Just my 2 cents

Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

My install of vista just got killed by a new variant of Trojan.Vundo.
All my friends and family that are running vista have been hit hard, the first sign is slow net.
All started a few days ago, 10 vista machines that i know of, and that is every one of the people i know with vista.
Then random pop ups in ie, this is a cow to remove that leaving you with the option of reformating as the quickest way.
For those with a dedicated htpc i suggest you be careful coz its spreading really bad.

Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

One more for AVG here - its basic, but has a minimal footprint and has been very effective in my experience over several years. I use it on all my MS machines.

Prevention is better than a cure and all that...

Tend to agree with pretty much everything you said... except this statement.

You are clearly not married. The HTPC around here is very much mission critcal. Having it crash causes lots of grief as SWMBO demands prompt restoration lest she miss recording something "vital".

That's what got onto my VMC. Symmantec got rid of it, but in the end I decided to restore a previous image just to be safe.

I agree, I was nearly killed when I lost 600GB+ of media content when my new MB's raid controller overwrote the existing HDD config without asking! (my fault for not backing up)

Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

im not running AV on my HTPCs, for the same reasons as the others...only internet access is for Windows Updates and Guide Data...

While setting them up, i occasionally came direct to here to download a few things, but not much. 99% of the time i download stuff with my main rig or notebook and copy it to my server for them to access...

but on my other machines i run AVAST and it works a treat! (used to run AVG, but i've found AVAST better personally...but there is nothing wrong with AVG)

Re: Antivirus & Firewall?

Yep, anything downloaded for my HTPC is always downloaded to my main rig, scanned, then moved to the HTPC or WHS. I don't are what the source is. Only exceptions; guide and Windows Update.

I use AVG free. Any thoughts on the new V8?
