Vista SP1 Not Showing In Your Windows Update?

A number of Vista users report that Service Pack 1 is not appearing in their Windows Update as a download/install option - this can occur due to a number of reasons:
  • You are already running Windows Vista SP1.
  • Windows Vista SP1 has not been released for the language of the language pack that you have installed.
  • Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool is used to block the delivery of Windows Vista SP1 from Automatic Updates or from Windows Update.
  • You tried to install Windows Vista SP1, and the installation failed with a known inconsistency in the file or registry structure.
  • A hardware device driver or device software was problematic when you updated to Windows Vista SP1.
  • The Windows Update service can detect the small set of device drivers and software that falls into this category. The Windows Update service will not offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device driver or the device software has been installed.
  • You have installed a pre-release version of Windows Vista SP1, and you must uninstall the prerelease version, or start with a new installation of Windows Vista.
  • You used the third-party program vLite to configure the system, and you may have removed required system components that have to be available for Windows Vista SP1 to be installed.
  • You see one or more updates for Windows Vista when you run Windows Update. However, you do not see Windows Vista SP1 listed.
If you are affected, you should visit the Microsoft page which deals with SP1 update issues.

Re: Vista SP1 Not Showing In Your Windows Update?

I've been contacted by pawelg with some good information on how he solved his SP1 update "visibility" problem:

Hi Mike,

I thought you might want to add some more info on to how this issue could be overcome by those who can't get SP1 via Windows Update.

In my case it was due to couple of problems reported by system at the initial stage of the installation where some of the drivers were not installed yet. "Problem" was automatically reported however there was no solution available at that time.

Issues were resolved by installing the latest drivers however I didn't know that those problem reports were still remaining oustandind awaiting resolution from Microsoft. Only the fact that I didn't have SP1 available in WU prompted me to dig around.

After going to "Problem Reports and Solutions" under Control Panel I went to "See problems to check" and manually deleted my both (already resolved) outstanding problems and then I removed all related outstanding solutions.

After that Windows Update picked up KB938371 required to get the SP1, which then at the next run gave me access to SP1.

Feel free to share that expierience as it might be helpful to some people.

Since this information may be significant to many people and does not apprear to be documented on the MS website I referred to above, I've decided to open this thread for further discussion in case similar solutions are uncovered.

Many thanks pawelg - I'm sure this will help a lot of people!

Mike

Re: Vista SP1 Not Showing In Your Windows Update?

Add one more point to the list Mike...

If you install Vista fresh, SP1 wont appear in the Windows Update list UNTIL you Activate Windows... Windows update will however show you all the other released updates (over 50 of them!)

It was only after I activated Vista that I got to see SP1 :-)

Thou, the other reason that this could have occurred could have been coincidence.. There are a few pre requisit udpates that need to be installed, so several updates/reboots are required before SP1 is offered.. Perhaps my activating windows was a coincidence that coincided with the right amount of updates/reboots.

Re: Vista SP1 Not Showing In Your Windows Update?

and for some Vista users who haven't been notified of SP1 availability already SP1 will soon hit their systems as part of the Windows Update service according to this release on the Windows Vista Team Blog on 23 April 2008

Worth reading this KB948343 - Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates if you still don't see it in updates

We're excited about the progress we've made with Windows Vista Service Pack 1. On March 18th, Windows Vista SP1 was made available for customers who chose to manually download and install it from the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. Last week, we made the remaining languages available - giving WU users the ability to download and install Windows Vista Service Pack in any of 36 supported languages. Today, we're happy to announce that we are beginning automatic distribution of SP1 in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.
So what does this mean? Over the next few months Microsoft will automatically distribute Windows Vista SP1 to PCs that have automatic updates turned on (Learn how to turn on automatic updating) and running English, French, German, Spanish, or Japanese via Windows Update. Automatic distribution will only occur, according to user settings, on PCs ready for SP1. After Windows Vista SP1 downloads, WU will let you know that "new updates are available." You'll then be asked to make a few clicks before the installation of SP1 will begin.

While we're beginning automatic distribution today, you might not see it right away since the distribution process is very gradual. As I called out on April 7th, we'll be distributing the service pack slowly so that we can help Windows users have a good experience.

As I posted above, we made the remaining languages of SP1 available for manual install on the Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update last week. We'd like to let those of you running one of those languages that we'll plan to start automatic distribution of those languages sometime in mid-May.

We hope you enjoy the many improvements that have been made in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and are excited to start automatic distribution so more of you can begin experiencing the benefits.

Re: Vista SP1 Not Showing In Your Windows Update?

So this will install it onto vLite'd installs and/or those who have the hardware/driver issues?

Probably a combo of the two are why i havent gotten it. Spent too much time getting my system set up with installing software, games, condencing the startmenu changing icons, etc, just to redo it because microsoft doesnt like having their os install trimmed down. Then with my mobo being an ancient nforce 2 probably doesnt work much in my favor n.n;;

Re: Vista SP1 Not Showing In Your Windows Update?

I'm still not being offered SP1. Windows Update is offering me updates to my nVidia network controller, Realtek AC97 sound and Avermedia tuners. These have always been offered but I have never loaded them since I rarely accept H/W drivers from Windows Update, preferring to get the latest from the manufacturer (been bitten by this before with dodgy MS drivers).

Also, I am still using the XP drivers for the Avermedias as they worked best when I first installed Vista and I can see no reason to upset the balance.

Which one of these updates would be blocking SP1? How can I find out which it is?

Most likely it's your AC97 driver. There are a handful of audio chipsets that apparently have problems with SP1 when using older drivers. SP1 is blocked for me for this reason and I can't use updated drivers since they kill my S/PDIF.

You could try updating the driver then roll it back after installing SP1 (this worked for me last month) or uninstall the device and see if SP1 is offered.

You also won't be offered SP1 if you have any important or recommended updates that you haven't installed.

If you are still having problems with SP1 not appearing in Windows Update - don't worry as Microsoft have suspended auto updates of Vista SP1 and XP SP3

Well, I bit the bullet today as I had a bit of spare time and installed the updates one by one. The key update for mee appears to be the nVidia network driver. I installed all critical updates (which include the Realtek AC97 driver) and still SP1 wasn't offered. I the put in the ethernet driver and SP1 was offered.

Installing now so we'll see how it goes. Fingers crossed I'll see some benefits.

Re: Vista SP1 Not Showing In Your Windows Update?

What I don't get is why the Service Pack 1 simply doesn't just replace the older updates? It seems a bit silly that someone has to install updates prior to service pack 1 when It has been up and running for serveral months now. I just did a format-reinstall today and I have had to install updates 5 times before seeing the Service Pack 1 come up on Windows Update...

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers - Scott
